Surly Steamroller freewheel & rear brake
Just got my hands on a steamroller about a month ago and wanted to have the option to quickly change to freewheel for certain rides. Anyone have suggestions for brands of freewheels and rear brakes to check out? I know the steamroller needs a front caliper for the rear, but I'm not sure what to put on there. Thanks for the help.

any shimano or tektro long reach would do. why would u need a front caliper for the rear?
a cheapo shimano freewheel would be good enough IMHO. if you wanna break the bank and some bling go for white industries.
i got mine from loosescrews.com

You don't necessarily need a front caliper. It all depends on the year of Steamroller you have. A way to alleviate the front brake on the rear issue is to drill out the backside of the brake bridge to fit a recessed bolt.

Because the rear stay, unlike the fork, isn't drilled for recessed nuts. I used a set of Tektro R736 calipers and switched them (fr brake on rear, rear brake on front). You could run an older caliper with the longer bolt from the days before recessed nuts if you want to save $$$. As for freewheels, I only run White Industries.
