shorten quill length?

Is it possible to shorten the quill length by cutting an inch off the bottom? Obviously removing the bolt first. Seems like it would be possible if I was able to maintain the angle, and smooth it up a bit.

Anyone try this?

If it's a basic "diagnol cut" with wedge alloy stem and you mimic the cut there's nothing wrong with doing this. But check the wall thickness at the point you cut it at to make sure it's as thick as the original spot.

Make sure the bolt you want to use will work with the shortened quill. Also, check the original minimum insertion depth and make sure you can replicate that distance on the shortened quill. I have done a couple in the past. No problems.

Yes, if you think you can recut it exactly parallel to the old cut then go ahead. Unless it's them plunger type stems in which case it's much easier.

another "yeah you can totally do it" here.

make sure you have enough threads inside the quill for your bolt or you may have to cut it too.
