Why I'm NOT a hipster:
1)I'm too old...56
2)I'm married
3)I've got a job
4)I've got a child...he's 23 and out of college
5)I've got 5 bikes, 4 acres, 3 dogs, 2 vehicles and 1 cat.
6)All of my bikes, including my wife's are in good working order and I've got good bike tools. I'm not rich, just thrifty.
7)I've got a singlespeed, but no fixie. Sb and pc the frame and built it up from nothing. My friend, Glenn built the rear wheel and I did the front. Used an old Fuji Del Rey. Didn't grind anything off the frame. I use it as a commuter and it's got hb tape, brakes and a hb bag. The tape is done in a black/white 'harlequin wrap' and I think it looks pretty sweet, so **** off, loser.
8)Sometimes I wear mesh hats to fit in w/t locals here in Mid TN
9)I watch the Lawrence Welk show on PBS on Saturday nights w/my wife. We enjoy it. It's corny, but the musicians are really good.
10)I just received a royalty check for a song I'd written a long time ago that someone recorded.
Wish I could do a 'track stand' and slam dunk a basketball, but I commute 40mi rt to my job and back. This year I'll do over 7500 miles on my bike and less than 4500 miles on my vehicle. My goals were 7000/5000. That's pretty good, I think. I can drive a forklift and an electric skid jack. Did a non-supported, self-guided bicycle tour of Ireland, Wales and England a few years ago. Did 2300 miles in 7 weeks. My son thought it was strange at the time, but says now that it 'totally rules'. All these things contribute to me NOT being a hipster, but I've got much respect for those that are commonly referred to that way. Because I spent 25 years of my life playing music professionally and my family gave me alot of grief as to when I was going to get a 'real job'. I love dark beer and stout. Prefer Murphy's over Guiness, though. And I like cognac better than whiskey. Martell VSOP. And French pressed, fresh ground coffee. In the fall/winter I make whole wheat bread from scratch. If you'd like some PM me your address and I'll mail you a loaf. It'll keep and I'll pack it real good so it doesn't get squashed. That's it.

wtf is wrong with you people?! another hipster thread?! get over it.
regardless of your wardrobe, career, or lifestyle, if you're still judging other cyclists based on appearance, you're a loser.

Uhm, this whole thread is kinda of joke, k? Maybe save up for that 2.0 version of humor that was released in 1982 right after Pitfall and Colecovision?

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
After reading a few of the more recent posts I think this is relevant. Us non-hipster here post some things about yourself. (this is in no means to offend anyone, just for fun. You all remember fun right... lol)
1. I'm not a messenger
2. I don't commute (can't, but would if I could)
3. Can't do bar spins, ride backwards, or no hand trackstand.
4. I wear a cycling cap because its comfy, not because of style.
5. I have grips/tape on my bars
6. I don't ride track, so I don't have a track geometry frame
7. I ride because I love it, not because its cool
again, this is just to have fun. No bunched panites here please. Not making fun of anyone. Love some of the "hipster" bikes here. just not my thing.

I will start my messenger job next month after my summer gig as a bike mechanic / instructor ends and to that purpose am building up a 1988 Kuwahara Shasta mtb as a fixed gear with slicks. I'll be doing this because I love to ride, need the money, and was made a very good offer by a reputable company.
I commute to the tune to 12,000 km a year and last year rode as much as pcad.
I can't do barspins because of my brakes, can ride backwards (badly), and can give folks a two fingered salute.
Cycling caps are practical as they keep me from sun burning me head through the vents in my helmet.
I have grips and tape... I prefer hand done cloth and shellac.
I don't ride track and don't have a track bike... but I plan to build a few.
I have Oury's on my mountain bike and they might also go on the new work bike.
I don't like tight pants as I need room to move but do have one piercing and am looking at getting a second.
I live to ride and ride to live.

* I ride a Bianchi San Jose because I like the geometry better than the Pista.
* It has a seatbag (with tools!), tail light, front & rear brakes, drop bars, and fenders.
* I run my flip-flop hub on the freewheel side.
* I'm too fat to look good in girl jeans.

Is the implication in the first post that Messengers=Hipsters?
Because hipsters are way too bourgeious, weak and effeminate to handle messengering.
There is not a single real messenger in Chicago that you'd call a hipster without starting some ****

and by the way if you posted reasons why you're not a hipster you're probably some ******* anyway
its like a thread entitled "Post reasons you don't suck"
anyone who posts in it has some kind of self-esteem problem and feels compelled to think of reasons they don't suck and then tell the internet about it
its really pathetic

Hmmm. If you feel the need to defend your non-hipster status.........
I still buy and listen to lp records on my very expensive turntable.
Drink my liquor straight; prefer single malt Scotch and port. (Balvenie Double Wood, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Glenmorangie, and some Ramos Pinto 30 yr. old tawny port)
I do not waste time with cheap beer though I did get a case of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale at Costco! for $24.
I commute by bike ocassionally; should do more.
I have several bikes, only one of which is fixed at the moment.
I have four granddaughters.
I have been ripping my lp's to cd for my hipster coworkers; some of whom had never heard of the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Brains or the Buzzcocks. (I sure felt old that day).
When I was in high school/college, the cheap beers were Busch, Schaefer, Mickeys, Stag, Hamms, Red White and Blue, Goebel's, and the grocery store beer that came in a white can with the black letters "Beer" on the side. Colt 45 and Schlitz Malt Liquor were the original "40's". Corona was the new 'hip' beer as were those Bartles and Jaymes wine coolers.
I watch only high culture tv: Family Guy, the Man Show, South Park, anything to do with cycling on Versus, the Military Channel, Alabama football.

1. Was a bike messenger from 1991-1996, from the no cell-phone, nickel-trick payphone days. Best gig ever
2. I haven't ridden in jeans to date & tight jeans are for chicks
3. I ride late nights, haunting the BX & Manhattan
4. I drink Bowmore Islay, a blend if I need a quick bottle
5. I own a helmet but never wear it
6. Last messenger bag I owned was named "Manhattan", logo atop the skyline.
7. No interest in tricks, that went away with my Hutch Trickstar
8. I can still ollie, kick flip, powerslide, railslide, etc. & my oldest son is 14
9. Risers are for DH, bullhorns are just wrong, drops are where it's at, brakeless is the way
10. No tats, piercings, I do have a brand

You tell me,
1. I am 26
2. live in Texas
3. am one of the biggest rednecks you will ever meet and wear wranglers, pearl snaps, and boots when I'm not at work or riding.
4. ride a suicide hub pawn shop murray ($60 total investment)
5. ride in athletic shorts
6. no piercings, tats, or other "body art"
7. listen to mostly country music
8. started riding fixed to train for tri's
9. am about as anti-emo (or whatever they call it now) as you can be
10. do not think of riding as a fashion statement or anything like that, it's just fun.

I can't be a hipster my pants come in mens sizes and I'd rather be kicked in the balls then wear a v-neck
I listen to punk, hardcore, ska, electro, rockabilly, underground hip hop, and go to shows
I just got into ssfg a few months ago while visting some friends in portland. We rode every where we went it was amazing and I got to enjoy more of the city.
I can be seen at a bar before midnight and I like all beer and Jack
I love classic cars and go to car shows and own a almost all oringial 1932 chevy 5 window coupe
The only trick i want to learn is a 360. You cant say that doesn't look awesome
I have piercings and tattoos (my ears are 1/2")
skate shoes and chuck t's

1. I don't wear nike because their products are made in a sweat shop.
2. I dont wear colored sun glasses because they look stupid, and are in fact, trendy hipster items.
3. I read
4. I am against obama.
5. I am MORMON. (Don't like Romney either.)
6. I live in Utah, and there is an uprising of hipsters everywhere. With their low v-necks that are a size too large, tight pants, nikes. I wear tight pants because they are comfortable, and I have legs that are thin.
7. I don't speak with stupid slang words. like saying "Word."
8. I buy all of my own bike equipment.
9 I ride alone. Almost everyone here who rides fixed has to compare.
10. I ride with a baseball bat strapped on my back in case of any troubleeeeeee
