I know this has been said so many times, but I prefer FG over SS just because of simplicity. If the freewheel mechanism becomes stuck or broken, you have to buy a new one, whereas with a single cog, I only need to change that when the teeth are worn.
And I'm sure there are freewheels that out last the cog but I like the fact that I can fix everything on my bike, and I'm nowhere near mechanically inclined.

I'm starting to see them all over campus here. It's not an isolated incident; I've seen probably a half dozen since school started three weeks ago.
By "pseudo-fixed-gear" I mean a bike that has the classic hipster fixed gear look: chopped risers, Oury's, Deep V's, spokecards, etc, etc, but is running SS instead of fg. The rider is always decked out in perfect hipster attire as well. Basically a picture perfect icon of the fg "culture" that is so fashionable right now, but then when they roll up to a red light or stop sign, the pedaling stops and the coasting starts.
It boggles my mind, because it appears the rider has gone to quite an effort (and probably expense) to replicate the fixed gear "look", but is actually riding SS. If you want so desperately to be part of the fg phenomenon, why the freewheel? I have nothing against SS (I have two SS mtb), but this really makes me

the majority of Fixes are gonna be conversions. You don't see many people at the pool with scuba gear. Perhaps you can look past my bad metaphor to see that i mean that most people getting into it will first ride a conversion/single speed, and almost always on a 10 speed frame. Most of them won't upgrade to that tarck look that all of us seasoned veterans have (hahaha).

FYI-Some folks ride SS, because knee surgery is expensive and painful.

If you develop serious knee problems riding fixed, you are not really good at riding a fixed gear bike.

What I find ridiculous is the college kids who take a geared bike and try and make it look like a fixed gear "hipster" bike by flopping and chopping their handlebars, installing tt brake levers, and throwing on an aerospoke wheel and top tube pad all for good measure.

I have a mountain bike, newer road bike as well as a old geared 70s Gitane I use for city riding in high theft areas. I hate drops and using aero brakes but love the mid hand position option of drops. Bullhorn bars with aux brakes make the most sense for me and im sure alot of other people. I admire classic bikes but could care less about tube pads, cards or any other accessories.

That would be me. Riding a SS is just boring to someone who's being riding a bicycle all his/her life. That's probably why I loved riding fixed from the first moment I tried it. The whole cycling experience became new and fun again.

Me as well. First and foremost I ride a fixed because of the workout everything else is secondary. I am addicted to excersice, its a lifestyle for me. I have been riding bikes my whole life, now riding fixed has opened a whole new experience for me as well.

My buddy and I are the only dudes in a 10 mile radius who ride fixed. We get some killer looks before we get into the city.
But to answer OP, no, I don't see alot of that **** in my area. Downtown/Uptown Minneapolis (about 10 miles away) is packed with hipsters riding daddy's money around. Makes me sick.

Thats fine--i'm not knocking utilitarian mods to your bike, nor am I a fan of top tube pads, cards, or hipster accessories; nor do i consider myseld "hip"-if anything, I am the anti-hipster. I was simply commenting that I have seen quite a lot of silly bikes that have been modified to "look" like a fixed gear bike--i.e. matching chain color and new bar wrap on bullhorns on an old peugot 10 speed, still geared; single speed bikes with platform pedals and only one brake, etc.

I also ride a fixed gear when i am goofing off with my brother and when i am training (i have some far off goals, but there is no better time to start on them than now)
I have always been kind of slow of foot (that guy on the soccer and lacrosse fields that has good game sense but will get smoked one-on-one) and use fixed gear to improve my cadence (yay hill repeats as i can't afford rollers or even fit them into my apartment if i could)
Building things is also one of lifes little pleasures for me so working on my old 10 spd and building my fixed gear was/is as much fun as riding.

I don't see any problem at all with riding a road bike with front brake only, FG or SS. Even when I ride my mountain bike on roadsI don't really use the rear brake.
