If you also have a geared bike, when do you use it?

I know some of y'all also have bikes with gears. What makes you take the geared bike out over the singlespeed/FG?

i have a felt z 90 and just ordered the motobecane messenger. I used my geared bike for races, such as a triathlon. That is what i am in to. I will use my new singlespeed/fixed (didn't decide on how i am gonna ride it) for training and commuting.

Whenever the mood strikes me. The brakeless Samson isn't practical for me for rides over 15 or miles, or if there are big hills etc. The rest break out something like this:
87 Colnago Sprint - Crusing around as it is an original condition pantographed/down tube shifter bike
86 Paramount - fast road riding since it now has a carbon Record 9 groupo on it
08 Cross Check - bad weather, touring, if my knees hurt, I probably ride it the most these days as I am doing a 3 day off-road tour next weekend and I am trying to get it as dialed in as possible
Penny Farthing - ****ing around, riding to bike polo
Tandem - when the lady and I want to go to dinner and she doesn't feel like taking her Bianchi
Iron Horse - mountain biking

Road bike for when I need to go fast (with other people on road bikes) or am recovering from injuries. 650B Kogswell P/R for semi-paved roads, cargo or long, loaded rides. Fixed for everything else.

most of my bikes are geared.
i ride the 'cross bike off-road, the road bike to co-op meetings and on group rides, and i don't think i've been on the mountain bike in two years.
my ss is my utility bike and town "fun" bike.

So far, I haven't touched my geared bikes in the week I have my Hardrock SS conversion. Its just too light and quick for me to NOT ride.
I will probabely use a geared for my longer commutes, but I don't know.

as of tonite, i will have my first geared bike, a Bianchi Volpe tourer from the late 90's that I rebuilt. i'm planning on using it for hilly century rides and general "around-town" stuff. i'm wondering if i will ultimately prefer it over my SS... doubtful

Yes, a 1999 Kona Kapu. I ride it for long rides or Alley Cats. Nothing quite like smokin' fixters in parking garage ramps or any sort of 'cent(de or as).
I ride my ss/fg for commuting, bar, rain, fun, snow bike.

My geared bike is going to be my winter commuter because it is
a) Aluminum
b) More upright which lends itself better to carrying a heavy backpack
c) Will fit finders
Right now I use it for nothing. If I'm going to ride 100 kilometers, I'm still going to take my fixed gear as I just find riding fixed just that much more fun

This feeling... This must be what roadies feel like when fixie riders go online and brag about "passing those lycra-clad dorks on their $5000 speed machines."

i ride whichever bike feels like it's going to be the most enjoyable on that day. speed and distance really aren't a concern except at the very upper end of the spectrum.

I built a 1x8 MTB to ease back into ridign off road after shattering my collar bone in May. I haven't ridden it off road yet, but I figured it would be easier on my collar bone to sit and spin up a hill than to yank on the bars while standing. My preferred method is to ride single on the trails, but I'll get back to that.
Other than that, the 29er is SS, Monstercross is fixed, and track bike is fixed.
