Crazy prices for junk on CL

Anyone notice that prices people ask for used bike stuff on CL is out of control?
I am looking for a decent road frame for a conversion and if it has round wheels and looks similar to a bike people just figure it's gotta be worth $150. And you can't talk sense into them because they don't know anything about bikes.
RANT....

Do you have the constant spammers who try to flip old crappy bikes for profit, too?

I wasted time and gas money last night going to see some junk. I was told on the phone, it won't last till the morning, it's a great deal, I have had 6 calls on it.
I have learned my lesson. If they don't speak bike on the phone properly and describe it as if they have owned it or ridden it then I won't even think about going to look.

i saw a trackbike on CL recently for $20,000 can you imagine that?

lmaonade 09-16-08 02:30 AM

just bought a brooks saddle for 5 bucks :thumb:

Its hit or miss around here. I use the St Louis area CL and I've had some pretty good luck.

A few crazies I remember was a Surly LHT for $2000 and a "vintage" Hardrock for $500. I go the same model/year Hardrock for $75 last week!

Right now there is a few great buys on older mtn bikes.

I passed up a great deal on an England made Raliegh, $40. I just couldn't get over there due to family.

check out the jackass tarck thread for the most epic NYC craigslist FAILbike that i've ever seen.

norskagent 09-16-08 05:43 AM

Keep waiting for a frame or bike to pop up that is worth the $150 or whatever, they are out there...

sneaky viking 09-16-08 05:50 AM

On a side note: Why do Peugeots go for so much on ebay? Like, significantly more than a (much better IMHO) Univega, Fuji etc.?

And all kinds of French stuff pops up locally way inflated. I wouldn't touch any of it.

i think n00b folks are more inclined to think a vintage european name like Peugeot is going to be better quality than an asian one from the same era. i also doubt they have any idea that the parts are an obsolete and hard-to-find size. and of course, the people selling the Peugeots are not going to tell them otherwise.

fivehoursfree 09-16-08 08:13 AM

Well, as dumb as the sellers are for asking whatever price, there is probably a dumber buyer that will pay it.. and not try to bargain it down.

apparently the hipsters will be hitting the singletrack now, instead of the tarck

CL in New Mexico is stupidly insane too.

Try to buy a motorcycle ... good laughs all around.

i found someone trying to give away 2 Nishiki grands sports late last month, alas, i was too slow.

4doorhoor 09-16-08 10:31 PM

Capitalism.

If they pay it, I sell it.

Stop whining and look harder for a deal. Bikes are worth what people are willing to pay for them, nothing less.

Dynocoaster 09-16-08 10:45 PM

Goodwill prices are getting up there also in our neck of the woods.

ianjk 09-16-08 11:36 PM

The dump/re-use center is still always free (at least for me).

Too many projects to even bother looking these days. Have pulled lots of old Peugeots, Sakine, Schwinn, etc.

Gas prices and hipness have driven prices up, but you can still find hella-deals if you poke around.

Motorcycles have also gone way, way up. If I had more free time, I would be wrenching on and selling cycles on the side. I've had some crazy offers for my low-budget home built Triumph chop/bobber/rat as well as my '69 Honda that we picked up for $400 a couple years ago. One lady offered me $8,000 to build her a bike like my chop... freaking nuts.

Also, my $500 Toyota sedan that I picked up 4-5 years ago and fixed up for $100 is now worth a pile of cash due to the low mileage ;)

bnhoang86 09-17-08 12:37 AM

Anyone here from southern california (preferably OC) that knows of any recycling centers? i hear stories about great deals all the time but i never see any

Azul the Cat 09-18-08 04:27 AM
