surly hub, smooth off frame, tight on frame

hooray for lack of response in the "mechanics" forum...

anyone had a hub (surly) thats smooth as anything off the frame, then when its locked down to the fork gets very tight and rolls about 1/10th what it did?

Sounds like your cups are a bit tight.

I can't say that I have had any problems with my hub and I really had to crank down to bring my frame in.

Please post the solution once you figure out what was wrong.

You gave up after the post had been up for an hour? Are you a jerk?

If it's a new surly hub, they probably need to have the cones adjusted. Check the Feb 24 post at this link or email Surly direct if you still have problems.

Like most hubs, there will be a slight bit of compression when you tighten them down in the frame, so you compensate for this when adjusting when the wheel is off the bike.

chris (isotopesope) had a problem sort of like this. email surly. i am pretty sure the problem is that your cone or locknut is ****ed up. they sent new hardware fast and it fixed the problem.

thanks for the advice all, ill let you know what happens

my front surly hub was being weird and making a rattling that was definitely inspiring such activities as my avatar would suggest. the hub would seem too loose, then we would tighten it up and it would be too tight. we couldn't find that happy medium. i found that a tiny bit of the threading on one of the lock/jam nuts was broken off, so it wasn't seating totally flush. surly sent me new lock nuts and t collars. the new lock nut fixed it right up.
