What do you think about pursuit frames on the streets?
Looking for feedback from owners.
|
my friend got one a few weeks ago; it looks totally awesome. he still says that it is terrifying to ride it. I hopped on once and I have to agree. Skidding it just a ton harder and there's pretty much only the one super-aero position.
If you're looking for a hot ride to get on a few times a wekk, i'd say go for it. If you want it as a commuter or a real practical ride, look elsewhere. ps- is there a specific frame you are looking at?? |
I think they're ****ing stu- oh wait owners, nevermind...

the affinity marta is pretty cool looking, but way too aggro for my taste. for some reason, every single one i've seen on the street has looked like tarck trash though. my friend caesar is the only one i know who has a really nice and clean looking marta build. - i'm a really big fan of the steel '99 aerotrack; there are only 2 of them that i've ever seen on a regular basis.

The Affinity is luckily not as crazy as some pursuit frames... it atleast looks somewhat rideable if you want to go farther than 10 miles.
Some of the old pursuit stuff being ridden on the street is just dumb though. I rode a friend's once and it was nothing I'd like to do again. |
the affinity is not a pursuit frame. it's a low-profile sprint(ish) frame. pursuit frames have more roadish angles and slightly lower bottom brackets since they were made for riding lower on the track. not all forward-sloping top tube frames are pursuit frames.
edit: i guess i should answer the OP's question. i don't see a problem with riding a low-profile frame on the street. just set it up appropriately. if you feel the need to put a Nitto Technomic and riser bars on there, you should look into a more conventional frame. |
what is the advantage of the forward tt slope on the affinity when the angles work out to be not "pure pursuit?" aesthetics couldn't have been the only consideration.
but you guys are right, the affinity is not a clown bike like many race-bred pursuit 650c bikes. |

I used to own a fixed time trial bike and I loved it. It accelerated like a beast. and was about 6 inches shorter than my current bike. was a bit twitchy but I got used to it
|
not a "pursuit" bike, but i've been riding an old geared time trial bike built for a 650 front wheel for a couple weeks now and love it.

A buddy of mine has an Affinity. It's fun to squirt around on short distances, but absolute ass for any sort of distance. The hipster risers certainly don't help either.

I want to find another tt frame with dual 650c's, but finding a steel one is probably going to be hard
|
depends on what frame imho. i've seen some work fine with proper forks (650) and such. some just look painful to try and use on the street...

Pursuit frames make for awesome touring bikes. You can bust a century, no problem, just tuck your head, and avoid the wind, makes it aerodynamic for climbing hills too! I seen cats hang panniers over the 26 inch wheels, lower Q factor makes it easier to hop curbs.
Great long distance geometry! |

If your going to ride a pursuit/TT frame on the street it should probably be set up like this.

The white one is mine...
If you are going to do it put some gears on it... or at least a freewheel and some brakes |
