DIY Beer Opener Modification
My beer opener doubles as a fixed gear bicycle. And no, its not one of those Surly chain tensioners w/ the bottle opener, nor is it the laser cut dropouts with the beer opener, it's not even a 'wisecracker' stem or seatpost-clamp beer opener, this one is 100% homemade.
The pics are crap-tastic (sorry) but the idea is simple- Go to grocery store and buy a 2 pack of cheap bottle openers. Hit the hardware store and pick up a couple bolts that mach the threads of the seat clamp bolts but are just a little bit longer. While your shopping for hardware pick up a couple washers and nylon lock nuts too. Grind the "pointy end" of the opener down so you don't hurt yourself. Drill a couple holes in the opener that line up with the newly-extended seat clamp bolts. Add the opener, some washers, and lock nuts on top. Barely noticeable once installed but it cranks the awesome knob all the way to 11. Cost- $1 for a 2-pack of openers, (2) $0.89 bolts, (2) $0.14 washers, (2) $0.22 lock nuts. Total- $3.50 http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...n/IMG_0436.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...n/IMG_0437.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...n/IMG_0440.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...n/IMG_0438.jpg :beer:Cheers! |

or, you could get one of these for five bucks at a restaurant supply store, they fit a waterbottle mount with no drilling required:

I'd spill beer (party foul) all over the place with one of those. My design allows even a 22oz Fat Tire or 1554 bottle to be opened while being kept vertical to avoid spillage. Photo for reference of why a cage mount wouldn't be very effective on my bike: http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...n/IMG_0428.jpg ____________________________________ hocdub- My original design was for an opener like yours (the ring shape) as a bar end plug on the left bar end. I couldn't get the welding/grinding to look exactly right on the prototype so I decided to do this instead. |

SPD (or SPD clones) work quite nicely, without the need to bolt extra crap on. |
god i want a transition MTB so bad !!!!! Is that yours? If so how do you like it?

Hijack: that was three frames back. Was a Covert paired with a Lyric 160mm coil fork. Very nice combo. |

that's really cool and more functional than the other openers. maybe you should patent it or something before someone takes the idea and starts mass marketing them.

I've said it before: new Chrome bags can open bottles with the strap release lever thingie.

you can use almost anything laying around to open a beer bottle. just use your finger and apply pressure.
|
wasn't there a pink bike/frame in a thread like a couple days ago that had a section in the rear dropouts that acted as a bottle opener?
