Leather saddlebag idea

Here in Gettysburg there are tons of stores that sell recreations of civil war era stuff. I saw this and had to try it. Its a leather ammo holster, 20$. Make pretty good, and is all leather, no other fabrics. Even the stitching is leather. Here are some pics, and a pic it on the bike held with leather shoe laces. Still messing around with mounting options. Thought maybe on top tube next to seat tube? Any mounting ideas?

(sorry pics suck, taken with phone)

I use a very similar bag I got from the Army surplus store. Not as nice as yours, but I bet it was cheaper. I ziptie mine to the back/underside of the saddle. Looks like it belongs there.

Your stitching is not leather, btw.

I meant to say every things leather but the stitching, oh well. Only problem I'm having attaching it to the seat rails is is swings around. Thats why I thought maybe the top tube, gonna try that. I'll post pics when I do.

Here are some with it on top tube. What do you think?

I know, I know... foot retention. No need to tell me. Clips on the way.

Think it looks good there too. Need to get some black zip ties though. Adds a little bit of "class" to my POS

I used a one of the double water bottle holders that attaches to your seat rails. Drilled a couple holes in a cow-friendly army-surplus bag that I could fit a U-lock in. It worked great for riding bag-free, if you can get your hands on one of those.

Having another bag down there between my legs flopping around would drive me nuts.

jim

p.s., where do you ride that thing around Gettysburg?

Hang it from the bars.

What SE frame is that? And the tires, what size and make?

-rob, Kenda Kwicker Cross. 700x32. Biggest that will fit. Frame is SE draft.

-jim, doesn't seem to bother me, but I'm gonna move it anyway, harder to open here. I ride all over Gettysburg, but a lot on the battlefield tours and equestrian trails. My girl and I ride some if not all the auto tour 2 or 3 times a week in the evenings. Asking because of the tires? I ride on some not so nice roads in hanover daily, and do a lot of rail trails and fire roads. Wanted something with a little "grip." The disadvantage of them on nice roads is worth it to me.

OT, yesterday did 20 or so miles of the C&O starting and finishing in Harpers Ferry and it was a blast on this thing. Cross tires made a huge difference then road tires with a little "bite" I used before there.

Joe, I feel you with the cross tires. I have had them on three different fixies, and wouldn't trade them. I still keep 23's on the Pista for road rides, but the majority of rides are on cross tires.
