Talking to another fixed gear person on the phone... And based upon past conversations..
Seems a lot of us are loved for the work we do, but not loved for who we are.
True statement? Able to fix things, but a bit on the course side..

I replaced the disposal at my Mom's the other day. She was getting worried when she asked if everything was OK and all I would say is "I need a bigger hammer"
note: Hammer are technically not necessary for this repair. They just make it a little more fun.

I must be loved for my ability to fix things as it is my only redeeming feature.

Let's see...
My LBS guy said, "please don't touch anything, anywhere on your bike ever again."
My 15 year old son said, "Dad, you are my best friend."
I guess I am valued more for who I am than for what I don't do well.

Sounds like you got the priorities right on target.
