Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Singlespeed Build Issue

I recently acquired a singlespeed built from a hybrid. It uses the Performance Bike singlespeed conversion kit and is running on the stock triple chainring. My question...I believe this bike is a 21 speed, but the Performance Bike website states that the "cogs are compatible with single speed chains and chains designed for 8-speed drivetrains". I do not know what type of chain this bike has (how can one tell?), so I wonder how such a conversion kit works with a 21 speed. Is a 7 speed triple chainring any different from an 8 speed triple chainring? I have noticed a bit of chain slip in the rear, so I'm just curious if this may be the root of the problem. Maybe it is just the tensioner - the chain has no stretch. Ideas?

I suppose I should have posted this in the Mechanics Forum. Please someone post to tell me I am an ignorant newbie and that I should have been born with such knowledge (no, please don't - I have self esteem issues).

I think that kit should be fine, but do you want to make sure that the chain is able to get fairly tight with the tensioner.
