SS conversion
I apoligize if this is an exhausted topic...I called my LBS and asked about a SS conversion and said I would have to just buy a new rear wheel?
The bike is a 74' Schwinn Sprint. Normal ten speed setup. Of course i would like to build up a nice fixed gear, but its gonna be my winter/utility bike. I was planning on using everything stock. Can I get a true fixed gear conversion for it? Or is my LBS trying to sell me what i don't need? Thanks |
most bike shops have no idea about custom work-- single speeds or fixed gear riding-- they just sell parts--- study the gallery-- go to some sites--- hang out with a messenger who rides an ss or fixed-- expose yourself to a velodrome( I mean, dont EXPOSE YOURSELF-- I MEAN you can keep your clothes on... wheres my Makers.....?

getting a new rear wheel is the easiest and quickest way to get a fixed gear conversion. not sure bout ss though.

I feel like a jerkoff now...I meant fixed gear.

Your desire to ride a track style bike in the winter is a little dangerous to me.... however-- a simple single speed-- front brake could be ok-- freewheel, good cruising gear... ok: however,
riding a fixed gear with track geometry is where its at, bro...... If you dont know what you are describing-- a shop will sell you anything--- get in with some peeps who know this stuff on a regular basis--- take notes and study-- I would tell you if you are in a hurry-- dump that schwinn and get a pista flip flop starter upper and be inspired for your next build-- learn geo. and ratios...esp vintage..... |
