smoking and the irony of riding a bike

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Keep smokin'. In a few years they will still be pointing at you but you won't be able to catch them.

I smoked for 10 years and the only real reason I quit was to get faster on the bike. Quitting ****ing sucked ... daily cravings for the first 6 months or so and I still get them occasionally. Luckily my head won the battle a long time ago so it's just fighting the occasional urges and knowing that I can't get away with "having just one" ... I've been down that road before and it doesn't work. Next month will be the one-year mark since I've had one and I'm not looking back.

PS. When I was feeling particularly cheeky I used to get in the ol' aero tuck (guy leading the paceline):

... while having a smoke.

I smoked and rode for years. I patched to quit and I really liked the dreams from the patch, that kept me on it.
I still smoke, just not tobacco.
Some of my favorite rides are that way .. with one ear bud.

Just do a google search for vintage cycling posters. It's available as a poster.

Thats what needed to be said. Nothing worse than a fellow cyclist that can't hear road noise.

I used to think the same thing till I quit. Then after about a year, you realize you didn't love it.

You love not jonesing for a cigarette anymore. The only reason you want one is because you smoked the last one. Admit it, you'll smoke any old kind of nasty generic cigarettes if that's all you can get.

He might be about to pull a switcheroo on you and make some lame joke about the similarities between chemical dependencies and the chemical reactions the mind undergoes when we experience the emotion known as love.

Nah. The only thing I'll smoke is Marlboro Menthols. MAYBE Newports if one of the 50 bodegas near my apt./job are out of Marlboros. If I have neither of those .... I'll refuse any other cigarettes that are offered to me. I can't smoke regular cigarettes anymore, period.

I do as well. Don't notice the winded thing, and I do smoke while riding, not just on round town/commuting, but on longer rides. I'm not ashamed of it, but I too hide if I have my bike with me, and if riding I cup it so you can't see it.

I sometimes like the funny stairs while walking my bike and smoking, specially the ones from people hopping in their cars. I think i just like the irony of the two pollution's.

I smoke. Have for more than a decade. At 28, I'm only now really starting to see the effects of it. I'm fairly active too. Though I rarely get winded, the hills aren't as easy as they used to be. Where I found that my legs were the first to go, they're now fine. It's the lungs that are strained.

I do not smoke tobacco any more, but still smoke via a vaporizer. I love my beer and riding with friends while buzzed.
Having an active lifestyle (and a job) is better than just sitting around all day getting stoned and drinking beer.

Awesome dude another vaporizer. I vaporize daily. Here and there I'll smoke for real if I'm at a party or what not but using a vape has changed everything. I feel better all the time because there is nothing bad at all getting in your lungs. The vape is the way to go.
