smoking and the irony of riding a bike
so i smoke, i have for 10 years, yet i ride every day for fun as well as my daily work commute. i know i would be a better rider if i did not smoke, only occasionally i get winded though and that usually that's just a result of riding to fast for to long when a good song comes on my ipod. occasionally i even see people on bikes with a cigarette in mouth, it always cracks me up. in many way i feel smoking would have taken a greater toll on me by know if i was not so active on my bike and other things. so how many out you smoke?

I don't smoke tobacco, but I smoke. I know it doesn't help riding but I'm in it for fun, not to best the fastest ride alive.

Ah yes, back when a cigarette could cure you of tuberculosis instead of kill you from cancer.

Smoking is my favorite thing in the world. I know I need to quit (soonish), but it doesn't change the fact that I just ****ing love smoking. Sucks in reality I guess.

I used to have a similar attitude to smoking with an active lifestyle, but 3 days into my latest quitting attempt and I'm noticing a HUGE difference in lung capacity. I miss the tabac though :-(

It actually constricts your trachea a good amount for 15 minutes after you smoke (like having asthma). Something to keep in mind if you plan on doing both.

I'm with you. I'm not a smoker, never have been, but I am not an ******* non-smoker, because frankly if I was, I'd have no friends.
I have heard that well exercised lungs are at less risk for smoking related illness if they are exercised regularly.
I have a few anecdotal tales, but hey I'm all for active people regardless.
I always chuckle a little when I see people riding and smoking. It's not a malicious chuckle, just the same one the OP gets I think.
Cheers.

i smoke cigs and smoke other things, I don't really come up that winded when riding. I usually will have a smoke before i ride or after i get some where. Rarely i smoke while riding, and usually it's partially to amuse me that i can light a smoke while riding still.

I do, shame on me. I don't smoke while riding tho, it makes me dizzy. I stop and try to find a secluded spot. I don't like to be seen smoking as I am ashamed cuz I know is wrong.
However, people ride and point at me with disgust... I usually finish my cig, get back on the bike, follow them, reach them, pace them, pass them and then drop them ... I would be a faster rider rider if I quit smoking... but I AM faster than most around here anyway

Yeah, not smoking makes a big difference, in fact, I've given it up to get back into decent shape over the past 4 weeks but I've been jonesin' a little bit, not too bad. My great love & vice is beer though and drunken bike rides. You haven't lived until you've vomited from boozin' & ridin'.
