Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Top speed?

Just curious if anyone knows theirs? I tried the search function. I'm going to do mine later tonight or maybe tomorrow. The wind is blowing about 15 kts right now, so I think the only way to do it tonight would be to do one going up the street, and one going down, then average the two.

That's not really going to give you a top speed, it'll just tell you what your average speed is if you're riding somewhere against the wind and then back again with the wind...

I have no idea what mine is. Fast enough I reckon

No, that'll give me a top speed, alright. As long as I'm pedaling as fast as I can both directions, and the directions are opposed. If you think of the wind as a vector in a force diagram, whatever additional force the wind is putting behind me going one way will be exactly the same on the way back, except it will be in front of me. The average will be my speed with no additional force, positive or negative, from the wind.

Yeah but figure in gusts, wind direction, and the fact that you spin out no matter what....so basically the wind will only hurt you, assuming that you can spin out completely going with the wind.

Is that windspeed inside your head or outside?

Good points. Wind direction won't matter, and it's not really gusting right now (actually it's a really steady wind), but I have no idea if I can spin out going downwind.

Still, I guess I'm just kind of bored. I could at least get an idea, right? You guys can't tell me you've never wondered how fast you could get yourself going on your bike, or maybe you could.

wind is relative( and she doesnt pay rent). but speed and quickness are two different things....
the guy at the finish line with his hands raised in victory will certainly give you the correct answer.

I'm not saying it's anything crucial, and I'm certainly not going to try and conclude anything about my skill as a cyclist from the results. I'm curious and I just think it would be cool to know.
