2004 Specialized Langster - Worth $350?

I've got a chance to pick one up this week. I think it's in my size, but won't know for sure until I ride it. Does it sound like a good value? Langster haters need not reply. : D

friscorice88 09-28-08 08:37 PM

id buy it in a heart beat!!!

Back2Kill 09-28-08 08:38 PM

No. That's five seasons ago. Someone is being a little proud. Maybe if it has a list of quality upgrades...

bitterspeak 09-28-08 08:41 PM

^^^ +1

$350 is a lot for a five year old bike. If it's just stock, ask for $250.

uke 09-28-08 08:42 PM

Really? Wow. No, there aren't any upgrades as far as I can tell. The person was originally selling the bike for $450. I offered $300, and we met at $350.

bitterspeak 09-28-08 08:44 PM

MSRP for a 2004 Langster was $440. People probably got it for even cheaper.

atlascomplete 09-28-08 08:53 PM

I think it's a good deal, maybe $300, but either way it's a good quality bike.

uke 09-28-08 08:58 PM

Hmm. I've got two 'yes' and two 'no'. I don't like the idea of paying nearly full retail for an older bike, though. I thought this was originally $750, but if it was $440 back in 2004...

I'm going to offer $200 and see what he says. Maybe I can bring the price down some more.

SheistyMike 09-28-08 09:26 PM

It doesn't matter what it was worth in 2004. That was a different market. All that matters is how it compares spec/condition/price wise with current bikes. I'd buy it if it was well maintained.

Yes.

Punx 09-28-08 10:45 PM

I would try to offer like $250-$300 though since it's msrp was $450.

To me, that fork is butt. There's a reason no one specs Alu forks anymore.

I wouldn't buy a 4 year old used bike for $90 less than retail. I wouldn't buy a 1 month old bike for $90 less than retail. The warranty is worth that. I would literally be kicking the tires of this bike, and unless they were BRAND NEW, be telling the seller that you had to buy new ones at $20 a pop. I'm just saying, think of what you'd have to replace vs. a new bike.

I'd buy IF: you really want a cheap aluminum frame you can paint white and make a mini-Concept. And you are aware that you'll potentially be compelled, by upgrade-itis, to buy a new carbon fork.

uke 09-29-08 03:21 PM

All right, he responded saying he bought it for more than 440 back then, that it's in good condition, etc, and that he won't go below 350. I'm probably going to let it go if I can't bring the price down more.

triplesixer 09-29-08 03:22 PM

No. Don't do it.

Fasto 09-29-08 03:33 PM

Don't do it... I wonder how much he thinks he paid for it in 05... You've got a handful of bike afficionados/websites telling you it was 440 3 years ago... What does he expect us to believe he paid? 6? it seems like bad idea.. Whether he got ripped off or not shouldn't be your burden.. if he's not willing to give it to you for <300 I'd let that **** go, there will be others...
