use "natural" leather straps like the natural toshis - as far as I know they do not have dye. my toshis are natural and have gone through snow and rain and they do not stain my shoes. they look worn and dingy, but they are strong still and do not stain.

my soma doubles streched liked hell and got all janky in 3 months of riding.
Running campy record singles right now...so far so good. Leather is nice and thick. Double layer w/ laminate. Couldn't quite pony up for the toshis....at least not yet.

You can always try 2 pairs of the Pake Space straps with a doublizer (or soma double strap clips). Theyre urethane coated nylon and my pair have been lasting strong since I got them a few months ago. Durability wise I think theyre much stronger than the expensive high-end leather straps. They hold their shape and have never slipped or stretched on me. But I will conceed that the high-end leather straps are much more comfortable and plyable.
If you have the money (or save up) Id say go with the toshis. The pake straps are nice, but I wish I just saved up an extra $50 for the toshis.

I've been using MKS all this while, singles and doubles, and they both stain. My singles stopped staining after a couple of years, but I'm starting the cycle all over again with the new doubles I just got... and I just got new cycling shoes to go along with them... damm

i have the errebi sprints. i think i paid somewhere from 60-70 for them. they were a pain to install so i had the shop install. i used them for a while but they were so wide that they could hardly be adjusted. I ran then on mks sylvan track pedals btw. i got hit by a car and that caused me to have to switch pedal. it also slightly bent the clamps but i bent those back. when i tried removing them they were so ****ing hard to take off. they ended up spliting completely som part stayed together but on one strip both parts split from the middle piece. it is by far the worst purchase i have ever made. i now have different pedals in which they will fit more confortable but now i have split straps. i tried super glue but that did not work/split in like 5 min. i bought some epoxy maybe that will work. if now im gonna be ****ing pissed off. sorry to come in here and rant about my straps. but i will say that they didnt break/strech at all. werd.

it wasnt worth it for me to buy them and then use them with the sylvan tracks which about a month later i found out are know for eating doubles. if i had bought them and used them with these new dimensions i bought which are styled after the custom nuevos(is that the model name?) then they would have been an awesome buy. but the whole time they were functional and not split they were awesome straps and gave me awesome stopping power and kept my feet in snug.

Do you own a set Toshi doubles? My arms were sore as hell by the time I was done pulling mine through my pedals with a set of needle-nose pliers. Those things are SNUG. If they're gonna slip, it's gonna be on the order of like 1mm per decade. Maybe in 100 years I'll give 'em a tug.

If you're on a budget, just get single Toshi's. I like them better than the doubles, having used both.
No offense to the poster of this picture, but this set up makes zero sense to me. It certainly should not serve as a guide as to how others should set up pedals straps and buttons. I'm just at a loss.

The buttons are supposed to be attached at the ends to make the straps easier to tighten. The reason it doesn't make any sense is because it's incorrect. "Set it and forget it" is the wrong way to set up toe straps, and if you're gonna do it that way, save yourself $90 and get a set of nylon straps because you are going to see zero benefit from Toshi doubles.
Of course, someone is right this second preparing to quote me and tell me that I'm wrong and that how you set up your straps is all a matter of personal preference, but they're wrong too. There is a right way and a wrong way to run straps, and if you prefer to run them the wrong way, that doesn't make you any less wrong.
edit: Think of it this way. What if you got a new pair of shoes? I know, it's crazy, it's never gonna happen, who the hell buys new shoes, but humour me. You get a pair of new shoes, and they're slightly wider than your old ones. Oops, now you gotta move those little buttons over a quarter inch and there's 4 nice big hole in your straps. Oh well!

I don't see anything wrong with using the buttons snug against the buckles on a street bike. You just have to wear the same shoes all the time.

Because you can't easily loosen and tighten the straps, which is the correct way to use toestraps and toeclips. It isn't just a matter of shoe dimensions, retention ability, or ease of release either. From hour to hour, day to day, and season to season, feet tend to change size a bit. Sometimes this is due to mild injury, sometimes to ambient temperatures. Adjustability of toestraps is key for comfort because of this. Correctly tightened toestraps are also safer for those riding sans brakes or those apt to sprint.

I just don't see why everyone would be that worried about straps as to spend that much on them. My roommate has been running the cheap nylon straps that come on cheap $25 pedal clip combo things at the bike shop and has no problems. Sure they have a bunch of electricians tape on em cause they fray and to hold the ton of extra strap from flapping in the wind, but harbor freight tools has a sale right now, 10 rolls of tape for $4. Electricians tape is a bike best friend.
I have just been riding some bmx platform pedals for 6 months with no issues. Never had clips, I've ridden em sure, but they aren't that big of deal. Can you not stop without straps? 1 leg skid? If your so worried about stopping grow a pair and Ted stop. It really the only safe fool proof way to stop. What if you chain comes off or breaks, how are your hundred dollar straps gonna help you with that? I can Ted stop going 30mph, learned from the man himself.
And if you just NEED some straps, use hose clamps. Tom Mosher is doing it now. And if he can do what he does on hose clamps, they must work. And they're like $5 for some nice ones.

So what's the overall opinion.
Soma? Toshi? MKS? Kashimax?
As far as my wallet's concerned the Soma's make sense. Even if they do brake, I can buy them two times and still be using less money than going for the Toshis.
