27" tires

If this is already been asked, I am sorry, but I was not able to find it...

I am looking into buy a fixed for a friend of a friend, and my question is... it has 27" tires, is it difficult to find tubes and tires for it? The owner says that he has no problems, but he lives in a big city, while I live is a college town (one bike store) and they do not stock any (at less from what I can tell)
Thanks and I hope to join the fixed community here shortly

Nope. You can get cheapies at Walmart. I just bought a pair of Conti Top Touring tires 27x 1 1/4

I haven't had any problems getting them for my tandem. You might try mail order if no luck where you live. Ahhhh mail order.

They should be pretty common Kenda cheapies. Also, Nashbar sells several tires in that size. Harris has some in sizes from 7/8" to 1 3/8" knobbys.

Performancebike.com also has them - order online of course. Since they're relatively cheap (and even come with Kevlar!) you can order a few at one time though from using them on one of my converted SS's they hold up pretty well.

Tires and tube are easy to find. Now, finding a new set of rims is anther story!

theres still plenty of places to get new 27" rims. www.bikeman.com even has double-walled 27" rims for sale!

WalMart. The Devil's store. Use your LBS instead!!! This is still a common wheel and tire size. If they don't stock 'em, they can surely order them for you... :)

Tubes for 700C and 27" are often interchangable - though not all brands are labelled that way. Performance's 700x35-38 is labelled as being interchangable with 27x1 1/4 - should be the same across brands. So finding tubes shouldn't be too big a deal, and I'd expect to find tires without too much trouble, too, since there are still TONS of bikes from the 70s and 80s ont he roads that use them. Avoid the Wal-Mart cheapies, though - I grabbed one when I was in a tight spot a while ago, and I had to go through a big stack of them before I found one with a reasonably even bead all the way 'round... lousy quality control!

The Debbil don't sell no Contis. My LBS is putting them on the Fuji tomorrow. And if our friend is on a tight budget, it is a place he can get a tire. Now that you mention it, that other devil (Nashbar) has some 27 inchers on sale.
