Chainring help!
 

I know very little about bikes, but I'm learning. I have this bike (with new petals, saddle, all that but that's besides the point) but the one thing I know NOTHING about is chain rings. I want a higher ratio so I want a new chain ring, but what is compatible with my bike? It says it has a 110 BCD (whatever that is) and it's 5 bolt, so if I was to buy say this chain ring would it work? what tools would I need to change the rings? thanks!

Once you get the new chainring installed:

The "stack bolts" are the fasteners that hold the chainring to the crank.

If you want a change in gear ratio you could also get a new cog. It would save you like $30, you would have to have a shop install it for you (I'm assuming you don't have the tools to install a cog since you said you were new to bikes).

I followed the link to the bike, and it looks nice in white.

I like white at night.

Personally, I'd leave the gear ratio as Motobecane designed it.

As for the chainring, I note this bike has a 1/8 chain, which should work with either a 3/32 chainring or a 1/8 chainring.

I can't tell from the parts list whether this bike has a 3/32 or 1/8 sprocket.

Mine's repainted black with bullhorn bars, and I would get a new cog but it already has a 16 tooth cog and since the hub has english threading i can't go lower... so I would need a new chainring. thanks for the help guys!

on a related note: does anyone know where i could buy an inexpensive 46t 130BCD chainring that isn't rocketring/origins8 ? (preferably a touch lighter) thanks!

Holtz -- don't forget to check the geometry of the frame to ensure that you'll have enough clearance to throw on a bigger chain ring. Specifically, make sure that a larger chainring can sit flush against the BB without rubbing against the tubing that holds the rear wheel in place. Some frames can only go so big -- n75
