I have been borrowing a friend's and am in love with it. But since it is my first, I am not intending to drop 1500 on the frame, no matter how much I want to. I also just bid on a Peugeot UO-8 on ebay that I may win and am intending to convert it for a winter/beater bike, though I hope to have this new bike finished first.

Would you like to expand on your comment? I'm trying to give the guy advice. Named a couple cheaper frames, said he wanted to drop a little more, named a couple more expensive frames off the top of my head. What have you tried to contribute to the thread? It's just easier to come in and make some jackass comment though isn't it? :thumb:

I'm glad that you put actual tangible thought into the thread itself. While I didn't simply 'name some things off the top of my head', I did attempt to explain the different types of steel and aluminum, and that he should go with an aluminum frame in that range. My beef is not your useless post, but your ridiculous edit: aluminum is NOT far too rigid for everyday use, people RACE ON ALUMINUM. Cheap cro-moly steel is far too heavy for everyday use! While you suggest some NJS names, he's already looked through NJS frames - and for something new, in that price range, aluminum is a viable option. I'm tired of people hating on aluminum so much.

If you do insist on wanting new steel though, I would take the Kazane frame frame (from keirinculture) as suggested. Stratton, the guy who runs the company, is a really great guy, has done a lot for the cycling community (especially around Richmond) and his frames are awesome.

Anyone know what they weigh? There is no info on the site. Also, why would I buy this instead of an alien frame, given that there doesn't seem to be much of a difference and it is 200 dollars more?

Ahhhhh... The recommendation of the NJS frames was supposed to be tongue in cheek, unfortunately there's no sarcasm smiley. The aliens and affinity's are good bikes for someone with a little bit to spend on a build, but who's new to riding. When he said he wasn't interested in those I threw out some other more expensive bikes that I personally dig. I hate on aluminum because I ride it back and forth to work, 16 miles a day and in my experience steel is a much more comfortable ride on city streets day in and day out. I don't hate all aluminum bikes though, the old Cdale Track's are gorgeous and comfortable.

Being unfamilar with the Kazanes, aside from seeing there flickr, I'd guess that Kazane's are made of a better quality steel, and I BELIEVE they're custom built to order (not fully custom). The Alien's, while still decent bikes (from all accounts I've heard) are mass produced in a factory in Taiwan.

This is just from my understanding... Someone else may want to clarify further.

buy the supercorsa.

egads 10-19-08 08:53 PM

They are both lugged double butted 4130. The Alien frame costs 389 + 89 for powder coating (there is no extra charge on the Kazane) making it a 480 frame, as opposed to the 600 Kazane. I am assuming they have similar weights, given they are made of the same quality steel. The only difference that I can see is that the Keirinculture people have consulted some top athletes in designing the frame, as opposed to the alien frame, which is designed by Joseph Santaniello (dont know him).

I can understand forking out the extra couple hundred for the EAI frame, even though it is only TiG-welded because of the high quality steel. But I still don't understand how the Kazane frame is any better than the Alien frame (besides the different customization options, which have yet to be confirmed).
