Not a fixie but somebody I wish I had the opportunity to sit down and talk shop with. I think he probably could have related to the fixie thing. I also think he could have taught a lot of us a great many things.

Wow... I hadn't read the news groups much in the last 6 months so I missed the news that he had been killed. His site was great... Its a damn shame.

I remember the name Ken Kifer, but I cannot recall from what publication first brought his influence to me. That he should be killed by a drunk driver, released hours before, after being held for 12 hours for DUI and violation of the open container law, is just abhorant. They should take that (what else!) 29-year old male in a pick-up truck, and ....well! it's improper to go there, Ken Kifer was a Thoreau deciple.

As a 30-year old pick up driving, fixie riding, bike mechanicing individual I feel obligated to say it is the behavior of the individual, not the vehicle that is the problem. A drunk 40-year old in a Toyota Prius could have inflicted just as much damage.

I agree, but it does seem that the more "Macho" type is often responsible for the above type of death. Not always, but often enough for me to fear Pickup truck driving, beer can tossing, cowboy types than anybody driving a Toyota Prius. Maybe I'm stereotyping, but that's consistent with my stereotype experience.

Interestingly, I've actually witnessed superchivo throw beer cans at unsuspecting (yet deserving) Prius drivers whilst driving his pick-up. That boy has got a wicked sky hook.

How far gone though, do you have to be to run into a cyclist head on. More than likely, if it didn't happen at an intersection, the driver was off by 10 feet. I could see it happen with both going in the same direction, but assuming some evasive action by the cyclist, that driver was way off. Two lives wasted for what point? Nothing against 29 year olds or half tons, I was there once myself, but the behavior is symptomatic of a type of person-the vegan female postmasters do not fall into that profile.

How did you guys change the subject into truckdrivers are rednecks?

That sucks about him dying, when I first started commuting I read his webpage and it was inspirational.

there is nothing masculine about killing someone while driving drunk. If anything, it is a true act of cowardice.

I love sarcasm, I am often guilty of it. Well, maybe not guilty, just a participant in the process. I was under the impression that it was directed to me and that was the only reason I responded. I still think my response was pertinent. Sigh! Just another example of my generational misunderstanding.
