Singulator noise??
 

I'm hoping to do my SS conversion in stages. Two questions for those who have gone before...

Last weekend I removed the front derailleur and have my chain on my middle ring. Although I could remove my small ring, I had to leave my big ring in place to allow for the chainring bolts to tighten properly.

Would a regular washer allow me to do away with my big ring?

I plan to do away with the rear derailleur one day soon and add spacers to get my rear wheel down to one cog. I must admit I'm concerned about the singulator (or knockoff) that I'll have to buy. My bike (Breezer Storm mtn bike) has vertical dropouts. One of the appeals for me of going SS is the quietness of the drivetrain.

Will the singulator make noise?

I have the dmr tensioner and it makes alittle noise, but less than the r.der did before. I picked up some bmx chainring bolts that are short to get rid of the extra chainring. I have run washers as spacers on another bike before and never encountered any propblems, but the lbs cautioned against it. Not sure why but the cost of the new bolts wasn't much so no biggie. Have fun.

I'm with pyze-guy. Get some shorter bolts. They don't cost much.

I run a singleator on the RegularBike. It makes a little noise, not a lot. You can run it with either a pull-down or a push-up spring. Try both to see which is quieter for you.

Right now, I've got the pull-down spring installed. I'm going to swap out my rear cog for something smaller though. When I do, I'll switch the spring. With the push up spring, the chain engages more teeth on the cog.

And yeah, have fun. Building my single-speed was a great project.

No opinion on the Singulator, but as fot the bolts, I simply ground the nuts (or what ever we're calling the part the bolt threads into) a little shorter. But I was bored and the beer was down in the cellar. I did wind up still using some very thin washers cause the bolts were just bottoming out. Could have ground down the bolts but I ran out of beer.

you could get a bashgaurd instead of shorter bolts. it's look SUPER cool and your bike would be baddass enough to roll over everything (including cars) that got in your way....or...yeah, just go with shorter bolts.

I run a singleator on my SS MTB and I don't notice any noise at all. If you can get your chainline nice and straight, you should be quiet. I have the push up spring in mine so I can run a short chain and I think it looks better than having it pushing down with a big loop at the back.

Go for the BMX chainring bolts, only about 10-15 bucks and no chance for them coming loose from using a cobbled up mess with washers.

I have one on the bike i dont ride anymore and it made noise but i learned to live with it.

Oh ye of little hope. Its the hope of every bum that ever sat in a bleacher. Starts the first day after elimination and continue to the first game of the next season.
