BB Measurement question.

What does the difference in bb mean in measurement such as a 103mm and a 107mm? I am thinking if you get 165 cranks you use the 103mm bb and if you use 170mm cranks use 107mm bb. Or does the bb measurement determine the chain line?

That is the width of the bb spindle which helps you achieve chainline perfection.
