Question about bike with stripped hub..
 

I just found a deal on craigslist on a fixed gear bike. However, the fixed gear side of the hub is stripped. I am wondering how hard it is to replace the hub for one that is not stripped. Any recommendations? Will a cheap $40 from nashbar work alright?

make sure the hub is for as many spokes as the rim..

as a noob, you should probably pay someone to rebuild your wheel with that hub

people will probably tell you not to rebuild wheels using used parts.

Would it be safer to just buy a wheel that already has the hub built into it? Something along the lines of this:

Let me guess, the hub is on a Alex wheel from a Pista. Those things are the worst if that's true.
Get a different_new hub and wheel, IMO

I am not sure what wheel it is on. But, if I do decide to pick up the bike, I decided on just getting a new hub and wheel so that I know everything will work properly and be safe.

Yeah man just buy a new wheel. Swapping out the hubs will make you pay for the hub, the rim, the spokes, and the labor. Unless you're going to do the labor yourself which I don't recommend unless you've been taught or learned it's going to be much cheaper and easier to just buy a wheel that will work from the get go.

agreed, buy a new wheel.

replacing the hub and rebuilding the wheel is r-tarded. not worth the time or money, esp. since its probably not a great rim/hub combo to begin with.

Plus you can slap a freewheel on the other side, and sell it when your new wheel comes in.

Just for reference, provided you found a new hub REI will respoke the wheel for $50. You'll have to buy new spokes though and they charge about $28.

So new hub + labor + spokes vs. new wheel, it's up to you.
