the base of your pelvic bone. move the twig and giggle berries aside and jam a level in your crotch with the same kind of pressure you would get if you were sitting on a saddle.

1. Stand up against a wall with your back to it.
2. With the spine facing up, jam a book, preferably a bigger one like a textbook, up towards your crotch until it stops.
3. Hold the book or have someone hold the book while you move and measure the distance from the floor to the to of the book.

The book doesn't give you as accurate a reading as if you were to use something that resembles a top tube like a broomstick. You need to hold it up to your crotch and as mentioned you have to apply pressure without causing any discomfort. I always thought I had a 30.25" inseam when I actually have more like a 33 and after trying it this way my bike fitment has been excellent.

You trying to measure your inseam or check for stand-over height? If it's the latter, put your shoes on, feet shoulder width apart, floor to junk, as others have pointed out.

becareful with those aluminum tape measures that construction guys use.
I measure it from the floor to my testies. you don't want your testies to be pressed against the steel bar while u stand over it while u're stopped at a red light or anything. You want at least an inch of clearance.
