Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? chain?

I am build a single speed form an old miyata and was wondering about chain.
I need to buy a chain and was wondering if a bmx 112 length work or do you need 114 lengths?
Or what is the best way to get a chain for such.
Thanks for the input ,
John

chain length will depend on gear ratio and bike geometry

EDIT: you might as well just go with the longer chain as you can take links out if necessary

112 should be enough for most single speeds. I'm running 48x18 on an old touring frame and I use 102 links.

Better approximation: (4 * length in inches from BB to rear axle) + (1/2 * chainring tooth count) + (1/2 * rear cog tooth count)

Round up.
