skidding with platform pedals???

i'm assuming this is a bad idea or would at least make skidding harder... right? wrong? don't care and i should shut up?
just on my mind

Can be done. Low gearing. Hook the top of your forward foot under the pedal and push with the other foot. Crotch to stem. etc etc etc

Give hipsters a brake

I ride 46/17 and removed the straps from my pedals when I got them and can skid just fine. It takes nuts to stem and I poke one leg out by the front wheel but its not difficult. But I rarely skid anymore and just use my brake

Dude, are you serious?

ive never used clips or straps. skidding is not hard, just shift weight correctly.
48/18

riding without clips or some sort of foot retention is not smart

putting balls to stem unweights the re wheel ALOT and will give you great distance skids.... but when stopping why do you want to stop 100ft from here.

gestalt assault 11-06-08 04:14 PM

there's a difference between skidding and speed checks...

nahh 11-06-08 05:40 PM

It's not hard on platform pedals..it's just easier/safer with some sort of foot retention.

skidding with balls to stem isn't a problem.... stopping, big problem, especially on hills.

prawza 11-06-08 07:01 PM

so long as you run a low gear ratio and know how to ted shred

ADSR 11-06-08 07:30 PM

I know a couple guys who do it. One rides ~72 gear inches. He just learned that way. They've both got very strong bike handling skills though. I can't do without my clips/straps. Just ask yourself if you feel comfortable running a bike like that. No shame in using foot retention.

j3ffr3y 11-06-08 09:06 PM

possible: yes
sensible for stopping in a short distance: no

fixedgitane 11-06-08 09:45 PM

It you can't skid from your saddle then you are a ****ing posuer and should just get a freeewheel and brakes. just kidding...maybe. Don't hurt me.

haha agreed.... i actually dragged my whole bike to the dumpster in shame after reading that
but no i was just curious cause i'm building up this old fuji fg convertion and haven't really ridden it yet but it still has the old platforms on.

NotSoProjectPat 11-06-08 11:16 PM

and i will be running at least a front brake on it if not both.

i can skid one footed, not clipped in (read smooth plastic sole on the atac pedals) no problem.

stopping? not gonna happen.

clip in, and stop

72 gear inches isn't hard to stop

urodacus 11-07-08 12:32 AM

try it with platform shoes, and then get back to us.

Not at all. I was just trying to preempt someone asking if they just ran a stupid low ratio.

jussik 11-07-08 01:26 AM

Somehow I think if you're really going to be riding a FG bike, and at any real speed and in an urban environment, you should have foot retention. Whether you have a front brake or not.

But maybe I'm just old fashioned?

dayvan cowboy 11-07-08 09:49 AM

riding fixed without foot retention just seems ******ed. i can see a couple of ways it could go way wrong, way fast.
