there is this panasonic ten speed locked up in front of my house. it has been there over two weeks and it just has a simple chain lock around the frame. i am so tempted to go steal it. it has snowed (blizzard) rained and no one has taken it or moved it. it is late, no one would see. help!

yes thank you. im not going to take it. i would know how ****ty i would feel if i came back to it and mine was gone. but seriously, its been there for two weeks. ill give it two more.

take it to "protect it" from the weather and leave a note saying you have it.

reminds me of a bike i walked by a few times, locked off to the side of a shoe store. decent looking conversion, been there for a while. already half-stripped. the front wheel and frame are u-locked to a bike rack but the rear wheel is already gone, as are the handlebars. crank and saddle still on there and the saddle looks decent. but i don't want to be like that.

reminds me of a kona frame that was locked to my schools rack for easily two weeks via cable lock through a quick release front wheel. the bike was alright, but these components were awesome: king headset, tompson seatpost and stem, easton carbonfiber risers, shimano hubs laced to mavic rims, and some bontrager drivetrain. the kid finally picked it up one day while i was unlocking my bike and i told him to get is ***** together.

My advice would be to not take it on the obvious moral grounds, but also karma would no doubt come back and give you a metaphorical kicking at some point in the future.

if the snipers fail the pedals are rigged with a pressure sensor...the second your foot touches the pedal a sub-orbital satellite will fire a high powered laser at your coordinates...instantly vaporizing you and everything else within a 5 mile radius...

2 weeks is really nothing.

I had a couple thrift store bikes locked in front of my apt that I was going to flip, crappy mixtes, that somebody stole. Sucks. Sure, I didn't ride them, and I probably didn't pay more than $20 for both, but still, I locked 'em, they were mine, end of story.

In the words of pickles:

"Don't be a dick, be a dude."

Someone needs to settle down...

Leave the bike, maybe toss a trash bag over it to protect it from the elements. If its still there in a month or two and it hasn't been touched - rescue it. If you feel real bad put up a flyer in the area saying "found bike" with some contact info.

i thought the same thing about a bike that was locked outside a dorm during summer vacation.

It's not yours, you didn't pay for it, leave it alone. If it wasn't there, there'd be no discussion. Pretend it's not there.

If you left your bike for two weeks, would you expect it to still be there? Doubt it. If it was me, I'd chop the cable, take it inside, not touch it, and leave a weather-protected note attached to whatever it was locked to. Heck, even put up a few fliers in the area. If nobody ever claims it, fine. If they do claim it, you just saved them a ton of grief getting that thing un-rusted and re-greased whenever they did decide to come for it. Or turn it into the police after you've had it for a while. Or tell the Police it's been abandoned and have them cut the thing down and you can post up a couple fliers explaining what happened.

I come from a college town and see lots and lots of bikes that have been abandoned and left to get smashed up and rusted. Taco'd rims, chains made of iron oxide, etc. To me, if a bike has been somewhere for more than a month, it's gone back to nature. I once moved out of an apartment and left my bike by accident. I was shocked and a little thankful that only my wheels had been stolen when I remembered it a couple weeks later. Hmm, there goes my argument. Nvm.

There are hundreds of bikes outside my dorms, all locked with cables, that I know I could cut in a second. But I don't. There is one Cannondale this is locked with a Mini Evo though.

i can think of over 10 bikes on campus right now that have been there since i came to school here, some have been cut, the obvious abandoned ones, but nobody messes with the ones that are more in the public eye, thus they just have flats, and go unnoticed, and never cut off by the police down here. (yes they will cut bikes off, because they take up rack space)

1 or 2 of which i wouldn't mind having the frame of O:-)

how long does it take for a bike to be considered "abandoned"? i ask because i am in a similar situation.

Asking a bike forum whether or not you should steal a bike? Not so bright.

Stealing a bike right in front of your house? Even less bright.

Plus, 2 weeks is nothing. 2 months is another story.

why would you steal a bike that's been outside in the snow and rain? you should go find a bike that's just been locked up and steal that.
