26.0 bars in a 25.4 clamp???
anyone done it? or anyone have opinions? i feel like it wouldnt be that of a deal but was curious if people have done it or are running it. any input is nice. even negative...i like to laugh.
thanks for the help amigos |
Friend of mine has done it with his 25.4 Thomson, according to him he's never had a problem.
|
thanks for the quick reply. thats what i was thinking. since it keeps becoming harder to finD 26.0 thomson stems since they are out of production i wanted to be able to run pursuits and flats and they have different clamp diameters
|
I bought 26.4 Cinelli giro bars to go with a Colnago(ITM) 26.0 stem. The bar doesn't sit flush in the bars. It may work for you but it didn't in this situation for me.

I ran this set up for a little while. My bars now have dents in them from the stem and I am a little frightened to use them now. they are probably fine to be honest
|
Stretching 26.0 to 26.4 used to be fairly common, and frowned upon, when Cinelli was still rolling 26.4, but that was on single bolt stems so it may be more palatable on a 4 bolt stem, but you might not get as good of contact between the bar stem. If you ride really aggressively or put in lots of miles you might want to hold out for the right fit.

Two bolt pop top - You probably won't die, but make sure you've got good dental none the less Four bolts - Either way works just fine. Just don't go gorilla on tightening this down |
I like how 7 posts detail saying it's ok without even asking the OP if it's a quill or threadless stem. Please everyone, just stop posting incorrect nonsense before you get someone killed or seriously injured.
|
it would be a 4 bolt threadless stem just to let you know..either a thomson elit or nitto
|
I was also wondering if this was for a quilled stem. No sweat doing this with a removable face plate but can be very difficult on a standard quill stem. I've actually pryed the heck out of my Nitto track stem and inserted 26mm bullhorns. It's still holding strong after 4 years.
|
yea i figured it would be cool with a removable face plate. thanks for the help amigos
now Nitto UI-5GX Threadless Stem or thomson elite? i would probly get the nitto in 90 and so far i havent gound the elite in a 90 but havent looked hard. so suggestions? preferences? opinions? i got some Nitto 2500AA as a gift which are hte 25.4 and have some bullhorns but they are on my beater so i might get some pursuits. whats the difference in hte rb019 and rb021?? |
ui-5gx is a solid stem. that's what I run.
rb019 is flat. rb021 has a drop. |

threadless http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/p...raft27/H2O.jpg quill http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/p...7/H2Oquill.jpg You should now what you're talking about before talking sh**. |
threadless usually has a removable face plate, quill usually doesn't. OBVIOUSLY

Please explain how a quill or threadless stem would affect the stem/handlebar junction diferently.

i did it with a quill and just pried the clamp open w/ a crowbar... pretty ghetto/lazy/cheap of me but so far no issues

Because you're bending a piece of aluminum. Generally considered a BAD idea.

my point is that the way the stem mounts to the fork, has nothing to do with the way it holds the handlebars. The photos should make that point obvious to anyone that isn't blind.

Don't pretend you didn't edit those pictures in there after I wrote that. You know as well as I do most quill stems don't have a removable faceplate.
before threadless stems became the norm, many quill stems had removable faceplates. I stand by what I said in my first post to operator. |
FWIW after the first reply, the OP stated he was planning on using a Thomson stem.
|
OP, there's some misinformation in here. there's no way in hell i could fit a 26 bar in the 25.4 clamp on my elite. maybe you're using a bulge formed bar that's not quite 26, but any of the sleeved bars i tried (mavic pursuit, nitto jitensha studio) would definitely not fit.
