You said, "you might lose a wheel". How's that?

You didn't say lock up the rear wheel through the rear triangle of the frame.

Thus my confusion.

If your going to do anything related with Charles Bronson you better bring a rope. Charlie, always had a rope and he always ended up using it. No really, I think a sting would be a great idea, it'll send a message to ass clowns who steal bikes.

How about some small GPS tracking device tucked inside the handlebars or something? That might be cool! Video tape them, and then track them to their dump off spot.

However the bad parts as mentioned are possibility of getting stabbed or shot, plus a bike that thieves will want but you wont mind losing in case something goes wrong.

Maybe set up a website to post stolen bikes and parts. Also try engraving all your parts with a dremel tool and photographing to keep in your files.

Were a tight group and if there's a website liked a Fixed Gear Gallery of stolen bikes and parts, I doubt many of us will buy stolen gear that is posted. Engraved parts don't go for much and very hard to sell which kind of kills the buzz of ripping bikes off. We may see a bigger overall drop than trying to catch a random thief with a sting and a better way to use our energy and resources. Just a thought

I like the dremel idea. The website idea is also spot on, here is one site that does it already: https://www.stolenbicycleregistry.com/

That's pretty rad. I did not realize I was kind of quoting someone. I'll have to read up on that obviously brilliant individual. Thanks for the heads up.

This is a great idea as well. But I like attacking from both fronts. For the ones that are already stolen, we can register on that site. But for the trash that's in the street, we can take the fight to them. Of course within the confines of the law and personal safety.

the ignorance in this thread is amazing. people have stole in the past, steal in the present and will steal in the future. its unfortunate, but there is not much you can do. risking your safety for a 300 dollar BD fixed gear is foolish. a theif cannot steal if he does not have the opportunity. use some common sense and take note of your environment, i guarantee you will have alot less problems. why dont you learn from your experience instead of ranting on the internet.

Instead of talking to a bunch of strangers on fiberspace, why don't you go talk to your community? I saw your thread on LA Fixed, and everyone else pretty much told you the same thing. If you're going to do this, be quiet about it. Don't announce your plans. Not that it's going to stop stealing outright. Sad, but true.

its good to announce your plans

then theives will be more hesitant to steal bikes if they think there is a possibility of a sting

instead of videotaping them you should confront them with a gang of people. it could get dangerous but most thieves are about cunning and not violence. i've heard multiple stories about people catching theives redhanded and beating their asses.
