ill probably try it out in january when the weather is better and nicer out. my high school that i go to this year is REALLY strict so it shouldn't be any problems of anyone messing with my bikeee :)

One hazard to bikign this time of the year.... leaves.. Just fell going to my class right in front of all the kids leaving/going the building. I wasn't going fast, my front tire just slide from under me as I turned and made me fall and roll onto my backpack.

I ride my BK all over campus and lock it up with a Krypto Mini U, and it's pretty conspicuous with purple wheels/ grips, and houndstooth TT pad (which is a hot commodity here at UA simply for the Bear Bryant factor). I've yet to have a problem, knock on wood, and am considering picking up a chain/ cable to run through my wheels just as a deterent. No cable is really gonna stop a pair of bolt cutters but at least someone can't just walk up and unbolt them with the spare 15mm they are carrying in their pocket. But, as previously noted, NEVER leave your bike locked up overnight on campus, or anywhere for that matter. I have hooks in my girlfriend's and my own ceiling to hang them out of the way in our small apartments. Her's stays out in the cold locked to a staircase. Muwahahahaha!! (Only because she doesnt care at all despite my concern and would rather have the interior space than the bike preservation.. And she knows that she has me to fix whatever goes wrong :P )

weee our bike racks on campus (most of them) are all rubber coated, so at least my situation is good in that way. people don't really mess with bikes here, just don't lock up by the dorms on a weekend or you're taking your chances.

most of the bikes here are just k-mart bikes.....i think i've seen a total of like 7 nice fixed gears

At my school my professors bring their fixed gear bikes into class too and we talk about our bikes in class.

if it means anything i daily my FTP (seen in my sig) everyday to and from class. i usually take my bike into classes or take off the front wheel and ulock my wheel/seatube to those upside "U" things.

nothing has happened to either this or my nagasawa in 1.5 years on campus (knock on wood). on campus there are other FTPs and FG bikes which seem to stay intact as well (knock on wood)

Yes, it was a joke. Just wanted to point out what a shame it is that every piece of your bike has to be locked down these days or you really run the risk of having it stolen and eBayed. :(

same thing happened to me leaving work the other night while I was making a turn. there were a bunch of drunk kids around and they got all freaked out, it was funny.

Then the same thing almost happened the next night while leaving work when I started fish-tailing like mad in some leaves.

I live in a decent, working-class area and bike theft here is worse than on-campus in the middle of the roughest part of Philadelphia. I got a wheel stolen here, but last year I'd leave my bike locked up outside for weeks at a time fine.

I never even thought about leaves before. The roads must be coated where you guys are. Now I'm going to be all nervous about em...

i noticed your location was chico, that'a a nice biking area, my cousin went to college there at Chico State

I was on a pedestrian alcove area when I fell so naturally there are going to be leave there. But also in some areas, if the place doesn't have cars going by every day, then its going to be covered with leaves.

It's up to you to evaluate your campus. I ride a geared bike to school, but there are several fixies on campus, all old road bike conversions and kept very mellow looking. One guy I saw with a deep V rear but it was painted reasonably and there certainly are no trispokes or anything on campus. It really depends on your fixie; is it flashy?

Also, my campus is pretty bike friendly; good quality racks and they're pretty much all filled; mostly well placed within sight lines etc. The largest and most used rack is right in front of the library commuter lounge with a window running the full length of the rack; so generally even if you're not there it's less likely for people to be messing around with bikes because they're in full view of the people inside.

In all honesty, biking in SF (high schools in particular) is super small. The bike scene a few years back (at Wash '06) was super dead (I'm not sure how it is now). I'm assuming it wouldn't be that huge. Like my previous posts before, I barely knew anyone riding there bikes at school. And you did say your school was a bad school. I'm guessing Balboa, Burton, or Mission, but biking isn't huge enough for anyone to jack your sh*t, yet. And plus most people like to drive to school or take MUNI.

The good ol' days when I never locked up my bike and had zero problems. Different world now.
