Riding Fixed To School...
 

anyone ever had someone jack up their bike when they rode it to school or anything. ive been thinking about riding mine when the weather gets better but last year i rode just an old regular bike to school, to come at lunch time this all scratched up and laying on the floor. would not like to have that happen to my single/fixed. anyone else had a bad experience or two

I've been commuting to school the last two years and haven't had an issue with someone messing with my bike. Though i have a hard time taking out my track or road bike out to parties due to the fear of a drunk fool messing with it

i ride my to class all the time. no problems, not a crappy bike either.

First, what level school is it? High school or college? I've commuted to campus (school of 20,000+/-) and not had any problems.
Second, don't ever leave it locked up over night. I left my old commuter, which was just an xmart beater, over night and the wheel got jumped on by some jerk. But I had left it out on a Thursday (heavy drinking) evening, so not totally surprised. Just a little disheartened that somebody thought that was funny.
Third, if you lock it up correctly it shouldn't be able to be laid down on the ground. I run a kryptonite newyorker chain through my front wheel and through the frame. It is tight enough that the bike can't be knocked over on accident, or purpose for that matter.

I would ride mine to school because there are bike cages, which doesn't eliminate the risk but definitely decreases it.

For work though, hell no. I work at the county hospital and would not leave any bike I cared very much about outside there all day.

I will probably buy a beater for this reason, or just take the bus to work.

I ride mine to school all the time. I carry my bike to class as well. The teachers were a bit subjective at first but I put it against a wall in the back so it stays out of the way. I catch flack from tool bags every once in a while, but I could care less. I am a bouncer at the local bar so most people know who I am as well. I ride it to work and stash it in the back of the bar also.

if you are so attached you have to bring it into your classroom, it's time to look into getting a beater. Not trying to be rude.

In all but the huge lecture classes, I can't imagine any one of my previous or current professors allowing that.

what school do you go to? it really just depends on if you're liked or not.. back when i went to wash, i only saw one person who actually rode his bike to school.. and he'd bring it to a classroom and the teacher would allow him to leave it there..

Despite being centers of higher education, I found most university campuses to be filled with ****ing morons.

I ride a Pista to class everyday, and I've never had mine messed with. Everyone rides bikes here though and there's TONS of bike parking. We have dedicated bike paths that run all through campus and you see thousands of people riding every day.

I lock my bike up every day at various places around campus. It's never been touched.

If you live your life being afraid of scratches in the paint, it'll be awfully frustrating.

It is not that I am attached that I can not lock it up outside. I use my lock frequently when I make trips to other buildings to drop off papers and what not. The problem is fixed gear bikes are blowing up on campus, I think we are up to close to 40 something kids now. In the beginning there was maybe 5 of us. More people know what they are and know they can easily sell them. We had a professor's $3k+ Trek road bike stolen during class hours around 1pm. Bike theft is a huge issue here, I would rather just bring my bike with me and call it day.

My class sizes are all 25 or less students. The professors are on a more personal basis with me, which is probably why they dont mind.

You'd get your ass chewed out at my school for doing something like that. Every single building has signs posted on all of the doors saying "no bicycles, skateboards, or rollerblades allowed in this building".

I've left my bike(IRO mark v with a few updates) locked up around campus for hours at a time and I've never had a problem. Only place in town I've had a problem(and not much of one at that) was leaving my bike locked in front of the Jimmy Johns in the bar area of town for like 10 minutes and some drunk kids were like touchin' it and ****.

When I lived in the dorms, i wouldn't dare leave my bike locked to the bike rack in front of the dorm because I saw tons of bikes with taco'ed wheels and slashed tires. My school has a reputation as a party school and drunk bro's don't seem to like bikes. Or people on bikes for that matter. I can't even ride through the east side(mostly the bro-ey beer pong, beer bonging crowd, nothing but students) without getting called gay or *** or queer at least a few times.

My college is pretty bike friendly. There are bikes that sit chained to a rack for weeks before anyone messes with them. I had one stolen two years ago but that was due to my own fault. Most of my classes are art classes and the profs couldn't give to ****s less if you bring the bike in. I keep mine locked up in the hall and out of the snow.

At my college we have lots of bike racks in a centralized location, so I'm protected by a sea of crappy cruisers and crappy 10-speeds. Plus there are a few token nice-looking bikes (like the carbon/aluminum Felt locked up with a Wal-mart cable) that I think take the attention away from my Centurion conversion with 'stache bars and a wore out Turbo.

Despite the relative day safety, if you leave your bike here overnight, your wheels absolutely will be destroyed. No exceptions. Do not ever think your bike will be safe on a college campus overnight.

I built up a bike specifically to be a beater-looking commuter (see my sig) but it's actually pretty nice and I've put a lot of work into it. Not a fixie (although I do have one, and it looks even more beater-ish).
I have a bolt-on rear wheel and Q/R front wheel and use a U-lock through the frame (around the downtube and the front wheel, and around whatever I'm locking the bike to) and have had no problems through my time at a major university.
Of course, I never leave the bike locked up on campus overnight.

That would never work on our campus. Most people ride long boards, so they are obviously going to carry them to class. In the winter there are less but come spring and summer man, just about every 4th person will be riding a board. I will be fine with the bike so long as I am not riding it inside.
