Clicking Sound?
 

I recently converted an old schwinn continental to a single speed. I love it but there is this darn clicking sound that I can't figure out. It is not the rear bearings. It clicks when The pedals are turning either backwards or forwards. The chain doesn't seem to be hitting any of the other gears in the rear. Any ideas?

Yeah, grease up that bottom bracket.

I greased it, what else could it be?

grab a crank and yank it back and forth. do this both vertically and then horizontally. make sure there isn't any give.

Crank bolts, chainring bolts, pedals, or a binding drivetrain.

What it feels like is a binding chain but upon inspection, I see no signs of anything binding. There isn't any give on the crank. How tight does the chain need to be on a single speed? I've got it pretty tight because I thought that may be the problem but it is still clicking.

If the chain is too tight (no slack at all) it will click. SS should be more slack than fixed.

i'm serious, if they aren't tightened properly it makes a really distinct clicking sound when you put the right torque on them

i had a clicking sound down there once and i took off my pedals and put new grease on the threads and it went away

Do this in this order:

-make sure it's not your shoelace tip hitting the crankarm (happened to me a couple times.)
-check/tighten chainring bolts
-check stem binder tightness
-grease seatpost clamp hardware and saddle rails
-check pedal bearings for play
-check bottom bracket for play
-check that the cranks are tightened to the proper torque
-check frame for cracks

Well, I could only test it out on a very quick ride but I think loosening the chain a little has fixed the clicking.

if you've got a conversion, its likely your chainline. even if your chain isnt binding, you'll hear the sound of the teeth of your chainwheel/cog engaging the chain if you don't have a good alignment.

true.... or if you have a bash guard type thing like a lot of older cranks sometimes the master link will hit the inside or rub and it can make some noises
