Visiting NYC, where should I go?
 

Me and the lady-friend are going to rent ****ty hybrids in Manhattan on Friday and check out the city. She wants to check out cool shops and buy records, body jewelery, and that type of stuff. We are planning to just wander around SoHo and the Village for a while then eat in Central Park and go to a loft show in the evening. Is there anything I should make a point of checking out?

Is traffic going to be crazy because it's the day after Thanksgiving?

For records, I think Other Music in the NoHo area is cool. In terms of body jewelry, New York Adorned is great on 2nd Avenue (and like 2nd Street), though there are more places (and some of them somewhat questionable) on St. Marks (equivalent of 8th street). In terms of fixed gear shops, Continuum on Avenue B is cool, plus there's Trackstar, on like Eldridge, just south of Houston.

Don't drive.

In terms of riding in Manhattan this Friday, I'd consider sticking to bike lanes and separated paths (part of 9th Avenue, and the west side bike path) over non-bike specific streets and avenues.

the first time I ever went to New York was on the day after thanksgiving. I remember it being miserable, but then again I was 10 and with my mom who wanted to go shopping.

I'm in NYC all the time, and driving there is just as much dodging and weaving as biking is, but there won't be much of that tomorrow because I imagine it's going to be f ucking packed for Thanksgiving. And when you're stuck in traffic in NYC you will hate your life. It's brutal, and will take you hours to travel only a few miles. I suggest renting bikes or walking... You can cover ground faster walking than driving most of the time. Hit up Central Park for some respite from all the buildings... The Met, if it's open. Everywhere is fairly interesting though it might be kind of hectic tomorrow and give you a harsh taste of the city..

We're not driving. The parking fees are ridiculous. We're going to rent some crappy Trek Navigators from Metro Bikes.

Oh duh, I interpreted hybrids as the cars, not the bike. OOPS.
