Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Biggest Fear Biking?

Mine is rolling a front tire in a less than ideal situation, i.e. swerving a car/truck/bus in NYC traffic.

my biggest fear . well , rolling a tubular on my front wheel at 45kph .
#2 is the front wheel deciding that the QR is just that , a " quick release" .

I once heard of a story about a rider wearing sunglasses and falling/crashing and having the sunglasses "gouging" the eyes out... I'm guessing that's a bit of a myth, but that's why some ride with sunglasses outside helmet straps

Yeah, this. Or having to dodge something on a road with streetcar tracks and wiping out then getting crushed.

Also: getting doored.

Other cyclists doing the ninja stop-sign run or wrong way on a one-way street without lights (esp. when they roll off a one-way the wrong way and turn the wrong way onto another one way, cutting the corner that you'd ordinarily be able to cut going the /proper/ direction ) and me not seeing them and colliding. The thought of a bike/bike collision at all-way stops is always on my mind, but I still roll on through.

Doorings....been there , done that a couple times. It is scary.

Being hit/crushed/crashed in traffic with my daughter or wife seeing from the streetcar/streetcar stop.
OR being smashed directly from behind, as pretty much anything else I can see/deal with.
Anything where I'm pretty much helpless is a source of fear for me.

I've never rolled a tire, but then again I have only owned tubular tires for like a month or two.

But I have heard some stories.

Technically, if the tire is mounted/glued/aged properly it shouldn't be a concern. But my thing is, the first time I flat & do the repair myself, those first few rides are gonna suck mentally.

Getting doored. Getting clipped from behind when some righteous driver decides I'm not going fast enough for him/her, and decides to indignantly speed up and pass me a little too closely.

If I was still living in Toronto, street cars.

well to answer your question . no , they dont roll very often .
i have been riding tubular tires since around 1984/1985 & I havent had one roll . but the fear is there . Under the correct conditions and circumstances its possible to roll ,but it's just a fear of mine .

Cheers

Being hit by a car in such a way that I am mortally wounded but die a slow, painful, agonizing death. Though being hit and dying in general is up there too.
