42x16 or 52x16?

Ive been riding 42 and Im alright with it, but it was suggested that I go bigger. I have a 52 around from my conversion but that just seems like too much. May invest in a 46, seems to be a standard choice. Is 42 gonna kill me though?

Most likely. 87.75 is a lot of gear inches.

go for the 46

52 is better if you like to ride super-fast and mash up the steeper hills, but forget skidding.

If you like your gear, don't change it because some ****** says to.

42/16 is nice if you enjoy spinning. I enjoy 41/16 or 44/17

You are going from about 60 inches to 87 inches. That's a huge jump in gear.

I still can't get on top of a 46/16 in the track, which is about 81 inches, so for the street I would definitely be lower than a 46/16.

If you feel the need to gear up, try a 42/15, that gives you about a 75 inch gear, which is a pretty good all around gear. You can go fairly fast and still get up hills with it.
