College lock up
Hey guys,
I just got my kilo tt recently and am worried about it getting stolen...kinda paranoid seeing how I've heard of other peoples u locks sawed through, and subsequently taken. I go to ucsb, and bike theft is kind of an issue. I think that the kryptonite NY would be overkill...but do you guys think a kryptonite series 2 would suffice? or should I go for a mini evo or something? I'm also worried that a mini lock might make it hard to lock up to racks and such...so idk
Oh yeah, I also keep my bike in my dorm room at night...so no worrying about it getting taken in the middle of the night.. I just lock up in between classes and such..
Thanks a lot

Register your bike with campus police. Here at Texas State University the police officer that registered my bike told me that in the 6 years he has been working there he has never seen a busted U-lock. He says every stolen bike seems to be either not locked up or locked with a cable lock. He even informed the locations on campus where bikes get stolen the most.
I have a krypto evo mini. Just don't use a cable lock.
Oh.... he also said that more bikes get stolen in daylight than at night but that's just around here.

A good U lock is triple hardened and very thick. Even a bad one would take at least 5-10 min to saw through with an abrasive cutoff saw. Most likely it would have to be gas powered since there probably isn't a plug near the rack. most U locks are leveredged open with a bottle jack, but if yours is locked properly this is impossible. The most likely situation is that your saddle or one of your wheels is jacked. Just make sure you have full coverage.

Okay thanks a lot guys
Btw, eastspur, do you have trouble locking the mini to racks etc? thats the one thing im worried about...
or maybe ill just keep my series 2? I mean, it has a $1500 anti theft offer, so that would definitely cover my bike..but there is a lot of redtape involved with warranties like that

I mean, If you know people's u locks are getting sawed through, I'd definitely not go with a U lock. I have a series two for locking my front wheel and a ny chain for the back and frame. I park my (nice) bike in the same place every day in broad daylight for 9 hours-- if it could be taken, it would have been taken by now. That's piece of mind you can't put a price on. There was recently a discussion on here in which no one could think of a single account in which a krypto chain had ever been gotten through by a thief. That's all I really need to know...

You're pretty unlikely to have your bike stolen, but there are plenty of dimwits with hex wrenches and socket wrenches, ready to steal expensive parts off your bike.

and front locking skewers should be enough for daytime campus lockup of any bike worth less than 1500.

Personally, I would use a NY fougedda... chain with cable wires to wheels, etc. It's a pain to lock up at times, and it is overkill, but I like knowing that my bike will be there when I get back. I've used this system at UMD and now at Georgetown, and I've had 0 problems. However, I think you will get along just fine using a mini EVO and cable. 95% of the people locking their bike next to yours will have a really loose cable lock just locking the frame.

Plenty of thieves here, but most of them are the lazy kind. Plenty of cut cables, and I've seen the remains of one cheap bell u-lock leveraged open, but as always, most thefts are people thinking 'i'll just be in class long enough to turn in my paper'. That's how my girlfriend lost her first bike. going on three years now I've been using just a u-lock, and not a thing stolen from me. As long as you don't leave it locked for extended lengths of time, and don't you dare lock it overnight, you'll be fine.

anyone consider cutting a fahgettaboudit chain to the length of a mini u-lock (12 inches) so that the chain can easily be carried in your bag (if my calculation is correct, a 1' chain would be 2.5 lbs)? I figure you can use the chain like you'd use a mini u-lock (post/wheel/frame), but with the extra strength and reduced chance of a leverage or bolt-cutter attack. I figure 3 people could split the cost of a 3' for a total of 30-40 bucks.

Here in nyc, I ride with a krypto chain, and a u-lock in my bag. Only using the u-lock when I'm in class or whatever.
Living in sf for three years I only used one U-lock with no problem. BUT, I do think I was just a big lucky.

Something to think about. But do you think in Santa Barbara that someone would stop some thief who would take the five minutes necessary to saw through your U Lock?
In NYC the odds of that happening are very, very slim. And some folk might stop to help that thief, give them pointers on how to saw through it quicker!
Now Santa Barbara is a far cry from NYNY. But ultimatily the thing that determines if you will have a bike when you return is the thief, how big their balls are and how much time and risk they wish to invest in parting your possesions from your person; even if they are locked to something.
IF you go with what has already been said above you should be ok and have some piece of mind.

kryptonite gives the lock a higher safety rating than the chain.

are you sure about that? I thought the fahgettaboudit chain was rated higher than the equivalent u-lock. and u-locks are prone to leverage attacks due to their rigid nature, where chains flex and do not snap.

sorry! the chain and lock are the same. i was thinking of the different new york locks. the new york fahgettaboudit lock is rated higher than the new york lock. i had been looking up a bigger lock and got mixed up. its that small size that makes it less vulnerable to leverage.
