WTF is this noise? (VIDEO)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz0FFZdSCmo
I feel like it's not supposed to make this sound. I noticed a slight whirr while riding last night and figured it wasn't good... The hubs/chain/cog are all like 5 days old, still lubed up and fresh. What could it be? The chainline looks straight... Each tooth is catching right in the middle of the chain. |
are you running 1/8 chain, chainring and cog? 'cause that's what i run right now and it makes the same noise. i ran 3/32 chainring and cog and 1/8 chain on my last bike and it didn't make that noise.
|
It sounds fine. Don't worry about it and just ride more. It will get quieter as all of the new components wear together some.
You actually used lube on these parts right? The stuff that comes on a chain is not enough. |

yeah, it sounds like it just needs some lube. All fixed gears make that noise.
But eventually it will quiet up once everything is a bit more broken in. |

Dura-Ace chains (the only Dura-Ace part that is somewhat affordable) are beautiful right out of the box.

remember to be really careful with your fingers around spinning fixed gears. New stuff just needs to be worn in a little.
|
^Yeah I also noticed how close the OP got to sticking his fingers between the chainring and the chain. Gotta be really careful about that. Good call.
|
your chain might be the slightest bit too tight. try slightly more slack - with 1/4" - 1/2" of play all the way around. i bet it'll lessen the noise and be better for your overall drive train and efficiency...
|
What noise?! you have to be kidding me! That noise is called a CHAIN going over a COG, you WILL hear something. You are not flying a ******** "Meet the Jetsons" space capsule! even that piece of futuristic crap makes a sound.
Put the camera down, step out of the basement and please do all of us a favor and ride your f^^king bike, then magically your noise may disappear. Its called wear and tear, its good for a bike. |

Hehe, the video of you popping into frame totally perplexed at a normal sound is pretty funny though ;)
It's nothing. As your parts wear it gets alot more quiet but for me it's never gone away completely. I've heard alot to the effect that 3/32 is alot quieter if it's that big an issue to you though. |

Ah yes, of course. Add that to the list.

it sucks that he rides an IRO...

ya let the cog teeth round out a lil and it'll go away
|
That bike is hella dangerous. I wouldn't ride it. Your crank and cog is on the wrong side, almost sure of it. Hella dangerous. I heard of people getting jumped for trying to pull that kind of stunt.
But for real I bet have one of the components on like that could be causing some extra noise. |
Really stepping it up with video in your post - kudos.
|
Sounds like a healthy drive train to me, but you installed it on the wrong side of the bike. Your chain also appears to be a bit too tight.

Did you edit out the part of the video where the girl arrives, makes dumb dialog and then...
Ooops, transport me back to my usual forum. The one with the "special" videos. |
