Sugino Mighty Competition chainring

I am curious about this new old stock chainring I have. Anyone know what year (circa) this is from?

What is the BCD?

Thetank 12-12-08 12:33 AM

its a sugino mighty, chances are its 144 BCD

144 bcd

they probably made those for a couple decades without making many changes or without making any date markings. chainrings aren't like sneakers with a new one coming out every year.

MIN 12-12-08 08:04 AM

If you don't know then you don't know. It's not made anymore and I can't find much information on it. Clearly it spanned multiple years but maybe someone can narrow it down based on the design and BCD.

My point was I highly doubt it can be known. They were probably made like that from the 70s to the 90s.

I have one just like it that I got off an old japanese track bike. All the other parts on it were mid-80s so I assume that the chainring may have been as well.
Just a guess.

Live2Die 12-12-08 01:35 PM

I had one from the mid-80's as well

norskagent 12-12-08 01:35 PM

I have one just like it on my bianchi, cept it's 151 bcd, 50t.

Cynikal 12-12-08 01:45 PM

Sugino used the 151 standard prior to using 144, thus why I asked about the BCD. The comments above are correct, that will be hard to date due to the long production time. Give the nice folks over in C&V a shot.

Great thanks for the info guys. Mid-80's sounds right due the earlier 151 BCD standard.

those are really nice rings! some shops have tubs of them in 144 and 151---nice find!

some of them have "niku-nuki" on the backside---some of the meat is removed for lighter ring.

sp00ki 12-14-08 10:58 AM

151!?

helloamerican 12-14-08 11:11 AM

you should hold onto that! <3 mighty comp.

151 BCD was pre-1967 for Campy stuff and I think it's about the same for Sugino since they just copied Campy back then. So your ring is probably 1968-199_ or so. Those are cool chainrings though, my favorite style. I had Cycleunderground make me one in that cutout style in 151 BCD so I didn't have to use the real Sugino one I have, and I'm looking to get one made in 110BCD for my cross bike. I just like them more than the more modern style

The only weird thing with them is that the valley between the teeth is a semi-rounded "U" instead of of a semi-circle like you see in new chainrings. Wouldn't that cause noise?

I have a black one on my Steamroller - also from the mid 80's. Nice chainring. I've noticed that mine does seem a bit noisier than other chainrings but not terribly so.
