Need opinions on this frameset- worth it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2008-Old-Sch...3A1%7C294%3A50

Saw it a few weeks ago. It's lugged, threaded, and in my price range. Any horror stories I should know about?

It looks like an alright frame, i have always liked green bikes, but, in my opinion if you are going to go out of your way to buy a track frame why buy one with braze on's on the top tube like that. Otherwise looks a great bike, i'm sure it would work out fine.

It's a Maxway frame ... same production quality as Jamis, Surly, IRO. I didn't notice if it was straight gauge or double butted 4130, but that's something to consider.

Seat tube/head tube angles are the same across the whole range of sizes. That's a bad thing if you'll need one of the really big/really small sizes.

Maybe he's going out of his way to buy a singlespeed frame, or wants to run two brakes.

I rarely leave anything exactly as it is when I buy it. I don't much care for the green and might even strip and refinish. I could remove the braze-ons at that point if I wanted.

I like it, but not the braze ons for brake guides. If you run rear brakes, go ahead, if not, no way.

Never heard of Maxway, but I owned a Jamis Aurora from when they were 1" threaded, liked it fine.

I'd be buying a 54cm.

If i may, painting it is one thing, but please consider not removing the braze ons yourself, or do so very delicately, it can really damage/ compromise the strength or your frame, if that is the frame you want just leave them on, it is only a cosmetic issue, and if you don't want them on there consider buying a different frame.

Thanks for the link. The only lugged track/ss frame they show is double butted, but it may not be simply the same frame only with stainless head lugs.

Not to worry, thanks- I've done that several times with my conversions. I know how to be careful.

Hasn't really sold very much. Not a bad price for a lugged frame. I would be worried about the weight, type of tubing only listed as Cro moly steel; probably just straight non butted steel. The head angle is a bit slack.

I remember seeing them on a large company selling them in there close out section but I can't remember who. It's something like IRO or Soma.

lattanzio 12-12-08 11:13 PM

also 26.8 seat post. doesnt look like a bad entry level frame.

Anyone notice the shifter cable guides on the underside of the BB shell? I mean, say what you want about rear brake cable guides, but I hope you aren't planning to run deraillers on this bike...

dietrootbeer 12-13-08 11:02 PM

looks like a SE PB frame

Looks like someone is just welding track ends on road frames to cash in on the fixed gear craze. I mean this isn't like a BD bike that just has road geometry. These have the road geo, top tube braze ons, and derailleur cable guides on the bottom bracket.

check out the bikeisland jury frames.

trustshoes 07-01-09 06:41 AM

does anyone know if these two frames are the same, the seatpost size is different (26.8 v. 27.2), otherwise I could swear they are the same other than price

das_pyrate 07-01-09 09:57 AM

Same maxway manuf, minor differences but the geometry difference is negligible.
