Pitlock w/ solid axle?
 

I was under the impression that pitlock made a locking nut for solid axles.
I see that there's a 10mm threaded pitlock, but it seems these are for rohloff (?) style hubs.
Any idea if that's even remotely compatible with solid ("track") style 10mm axles?
If not, is there a similar pitlock nut available? I feel like i've researched this before, but i've always assumed my next wheelset was going to be qr front. It's not, so i'm wondering what my options are for not carrying multiple ulocks.

No suggestions but I am also interested. I got lazy one day too many at the train station and my self-built wheel got stolen.

my condolences. i'm reading a bit and it seems they do work, but i'm going to wait for a "yeah, i use them on my bike" post before buying a set.

ps, jesus christ these things are expensive.

I run Rohloffs, the nuts are a standard 10mm, it should work.
That said, when I tried to get solid axel PitLock from Peter White he said he would have to order it and it would take several months for it to come in.

Nuts for $93?

think of it as a 0.00 gram ulock that occupies 0 cubic cm and can't be defeated without pneumatic tools for $93.

It's obviously more than just a nut... at this point it's basically some ol' dungeons and dragons shít.

I did the same thing, use a phil road/lf track hub with the QR axle for the front, but I actually swapped the axle from a HF track hub to the road hub, so I have a HF track hub with a QR axle, pretty sweet.

Most track hub solid axles can be swapped with shorted hollow axles for very little money, 5-10 bucks or so, which would allow someone to run the regular skewer pitlocks, Ive done it many times. This would be the ideal solution methinks, and even a full set of pitlocks, i.e. front axle, seatpost collar and stem lock would be cheaper than having to buy a new front wheel.

i'm kinda mad these don't come in 9mm.

does anyone know of a front axle w/ 10mm ends but "traditional" internals? something like this has to exist...

Idk sp00ki, don't you find the idea of heading over to bike church (or ordering online if you want top choice) and converting to hollow axle appealing? I do, but I don't live in the city so I don't find an immediate need to get my wheels secure.

sure. educate me, i don't know from axles. can i convert solid to qr (or something pitlock compatible)? honestly, i've only replaced a hub's bearing cartridges, i know little about what else i can do to them.

It would be essentially the reverse of the standard QR to bolted flop, as shown in that thread. You can also look at exploded diagrams for bike hubs. I don't know if you can definitely convert a track hub to QR but it really can't hurt to try out the front wheel on a cheap hub first. All you're going to be doing is finding a compatible hollow axle for your hub, it's just guess-n-try until you get the right size and length. That's where bike church might come in handy.

Even if you just convert the front to a QR pitlock, that's one U-lock down.

I guess the new question is, are there QR axles that'll fit inside of a 9mm solid axle hub. Having trouble confirming this online..

(though i'd honestly prefer something allowing me to convert to a solid "9mm" type axle with 10mm threaded ends; can't find proof of something like this existing, though)


i think i'm going to post in the mechanics forum.

I've always thought about stripping/griding my nuts down (on my crappy leave outside at night bike) to the point where a set of 12" vise-grips is the only thing that would be able to remove them.... would be a P.I.T.A. to carry tho.

IF you know a good machinist there's no reason you can't get your own 9mm pit-locks made, and a tool to go with it. In fact, that might be a good entrepreneurial endeavor!

Yes. It's nice being able to secure my seat post but I like my saddle better.
The collar locks don't work with all seat clamps either. The curved profile of Salsa's clamp and Pitlocks don't mix (bent one, wasn't happy).

I'd imagine you could retro-fit the brake or dropout ones to work with a post like a thomson if you wanted to get really creative, you'd just have to find a way to have the solid end of the screw on the top of the clamp.

It seems easy enough, and I understand why they make the pitlock for it, but in what regions are people stealing bikes by taking the headset apart?

you don't need to take the headset apart to take a stem and bars.
a few twists of an allen and it's gone.
stem/bars are probably the easiest part to steal from a brakeless bike. you don't even have to crouch.

i forgot about that... how do you keep it in there? hot glue or smfn?

CA glue (from hobby shops) to put in, acetone or CA remover to get em out.

I used super glue and ball bearings in my seat post clamp. Ant the prettiest and will be a pain to dig out if I ever need to but now I don't worry about my post.
