Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? fixed gear in the rain

How many of you kids ride in the rain? It seems far too easy to eat **** in the rain on a fixed wheel. Tonight I was biking at a moderate pace on flat ground going down broad (for all you philly kids) and out of no where i slipped out! Luckily the car behind me had time to slam on the brakes and was able to avoid running me over. Can this be avoided with proper treds? I ride a conti race in the front and some random markdown tire in the back. I mean if the guy in mash can hammer **** in the rain why can't I? And yes I can handle my bike haha.

Fixed gear in the rain is better than freewheel in the rain.

Sounds like your tires may be worn.

fixed is better for wet roads and snowy roads because when people start to lose control they want to hit the brakes, which is what most people on freewheels would do

but like in a car its better to maintain constant acceleration and to correct the skid, meaning on a fixed you pedal through the slipping and reassert your balance that way.

you probably have bad tires.

I have no problems riding in the rain...

You have to be cautious as when the rain starts coming down the roads will get slicker as the water spreads all those lovely fluids cars and trucks leave on the road and things can get slippery.

I find that a fixed gear offers the best control under any circumstances.

I've had fun riding in the rain. Geared up with Showers Pass
and lotsa framesaver in my bike--

If you are worried about it run a brake, or two. Skidding
is much less effective at stopping ya in the rain--which
is why it is also more fun, but there you go.

Yeah and watch out for those freaking ruts between the road and sidewalk and other areas.Hit them just right and *why am I on the ground* after they catch a tire.

The worst IMO is either those late Fall days with lots of wet leaves that make cornering really sketchy, or any street with excessive metal surfaces around the intersections that get really slippery.

Either way, riding in the rain builds character and makes you a better bike handler.

first off, can you really? I mean, many people say that, but not many of them ACTUALLY can handle their bikes well. granted everyone goes down on occasion, but if you are questioning riding in the rain, it might be time for a little more saddle time.
secondly, your tire might have had something to do with it, but I would venture to guess some more experience in foul weather would do the trick.

Wet leaves are a pain (literally). So is the first rain, when all the oil and brake fluid and road crap mix together in a disgusting slippery mess. Gotta love hitting potholes and debris that are totally submerged in water so you can't see them.

For some sadistic reason I'm actually looking forward to winter, go figure.

I love the idea of being able to put my cascadias on my touring bike and go schralp around in the snow, slush, rain and muck. Winter presents a challenge, both in the act of riding, and in pushing yourself to go ride and keep in shape.

hey I live right off broad st.

did you run over a wet metal road joint or a sewer grate? no kind of tire will give you traction on that surface in the rain.

also the road is most slippery when it just starts to rain as opposed to when it is fully wet.

My front rim is all sorts of nasty from that crap, and because I use a front brake, it acts as a plow, and scrapes it off the rim and leaves it running down my fork...

Aside from the car nastiness and hidden pot holes, I have never had an issue handling my fixed gear in rain...

I've ridden in the rain for the past three days...have been running 26 by 1.5 Kenda semi slicks on the new bike which seem sticky enough and they really suck up the bumps far better than my fg road bike.

Come to think of it... 4 of the five fg bikes I have all run wider tyres which goes a long ways to making the ride a little more plush.

Fixed in the rain is insanely fun...and terrifying, yet fun. I think it's the only time I'll ever be able to do nearly seated skids
