fixed riders using Mr Tuffy's?
I've developed a nasty habit of skidding through tires fairly quickly. I've been using the Avenir Discovery tires with the aramid belting. I've even skidded all the way through tires to the point where I've blown tubes. A co-worker advised me to use a Mr Tuffy in my rear wheel, so I ordered a set. I'm assuming the purpose is to act as a boot in case I happen to skid through the tire and to protect the tube. I'm curious if any other skidders use Tuffy's for this purpose and how your experiences with them have been.

the purpose of a mr tuffy is to provide puncture resistance if you runover a nail or a piece of glass, not skid resistance. while i would imagine it will provide you with a little extra time, should you skid all the way through your tires, you really need to replace your tire before you go all the way through it. how many skid patches do you have? 2? my suggestion is a different tire, not a mr tuffy.
or get a brake.

I guess Mr Tuffy might help, but it won't prolong tire life at all. I'd try a combination of:
Changing your ratio to get more skid patches
Trying new tires (Gatorskins are one of tha most popular and my favorite for skidding on)
Trying larger tires (like 25s if you have 23s now)
Not skidding

My gear ratio is 48x17, which is supposed to yield 17 skid patches, and I'm using a size 28. I understand the purpose of a Tuffy is to provide puncture resistance, but I think my co-worker's point is that the Tuffy provides an extra layer of protection just in case I do skid all the way through another tire.

If you're skidding through tires that quickly, it may be advisable to get a brake, if only for financial purposes.

It's not like a kevlar strip is really going to provide any structural support to the tire. I would recommend the soma everwear, which I think is unkillable - I've been intentionally skidding as much as possible for the past two months, since it's been squared for the past 9 months or so. Granted I use a brake and use backpressure / skipping more, but it's still going strong after like a year and a half of use.

At least, that's my impression of it. I don't use one, and don't know anyone that does successfully, but we have a few lying around the shop.

I had one in a front wheel and it was just needless weight. Just buy a gatorskin and don't skid so much

I do plan on getting a Gatorskin fairly soon as I wear out this current tire. Does anyone have any comments on the Ultra Gatorskin vs. the Ultra Race?

Ultra Gators FTW.
With one skid patch, skidding/skipping, and riding all day long, they are the bee's knees.
I can get a few months out of the back before it starts to square off.
The front only shows wear from all the cuts and glass it's saved me from.

my older bike mechanic friend relates using Mr. Tuffy as "wearing two condoms"
