Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? What age did everyone here start riding fixed/SS?

I've always wanted to know if there were people my age that ride fixed. I'm only 15 and i have been riding fixed for about 4 months now and have fallen in love with it. I ride it everywhere and Im not all caught up with getting my license like a lot of my friends.

So I was wondering what age all of you guys started riding fixed/SS just because I'm curious to know if I started out at a really early age.

Don't get too hung up over making a supertarckbike too. Make sure your setup is safe, fits well, and isn't completely hideous. What're you riding?

I propose we turn this into the young riders thread. Oh wait, that's damn near all of us.

I rode single speed when i was a little kid, I'd say 5 years old. That's the bike I learned on. Then i moved up to geared mountain bike, then geared road bike, then back to single speed (at age 20), now fixed (still at age 20).

I think it's fairly safe to say we all learned on a SS of some sort, and then the overwhelming majority of us then moved onto geared bikes (except for those crazy BMX folks). I think the quantum leap is the decision to "return to our roots"

Oh geeknerd you brought up a good point so I will sort of rephrAse my question. At what age did you start riding fixed and why did you choose to ride a fixed over all othermodes of cycling?

My first fixed gear bike was when I was 8 ... back in 1964.
That went the way of a smaller bike with a coaster brake within a few months - the bike was adult sized and I was riding it with blocks of wood on the pedals so I could reach them. For some reason my parents decided that wasn't really suitable and bought me a smaller bike.

Realistically though, my first fixed bike was at the tender age of 50, a conversion of a bike I'd bought new in the mid eighties and finally 'upgraded' to a new bike with lots and lots of gears. Interestingly, that old Europa is threatening to become my main ride again once the new Sturmey Archer hub comes out

started riding a single last week....didn't think I'd like it compared to my geared commuter and other bikes, but with as cheap and easily accessible the parts are I figured it would be easy to build and easy to sell if I didn't enjoy. I'm 28.
I like it though, it's smooth and easy just like hot sex should be. Doubt I'll ever ride a fixed on the street, maybe build one just for the fun.

20... when I moved into a walk-up and couldn't face hauling my cruiser up the narrow stairs everyday. I'm 21 now, and anything that coasts just feels wrong.

My first fixed gear was my trike at around 2-1/2 yos old. I eventually graduated to SS bmx until about 28, then when I turned 46, I bought another SS/fix (Langster-NY), then at 47 bought another (Langster-Tokyo). I ride both of them SS, but have about 200 miles as fixed. Just wasn't for me and my knees.

I'm fifty-flippin'-five and still haven't started riding a fixed. I'm a roadie and commuter who racked up +7500 last year.

BUT I'm converting my early 70's 10-speed. I have flip-flop hub wheel being built even as we speak. I just wanted to get one post into this forum before my wheel gets here and I end up killing myself. Watch for me in the obits.

I started riding 700C fixed gear road bikes regularly when I was in my mid 30's. That was almost 20 years ago.

But of course we all had our tiny wheeled fixed bikes as kids......if that counts....

only a a few months on a FG. I'm 27. road BMX and Mtn. Bikes for years. i use to dirt jump BMX until i almost got wrapped around a tree wider than my car. then i went to Mtn biking. i have been mostly riding my mountain bike on the street, so i decided to get a road bike. i liked what i read about FG so i bought one. i like it. i have yet to get a free wheel to try it SS. when i get my new wheel set i think i will get a free wheel to make a flip flop out of my old back wheel.
