Campagnola crank question

2 Attachment(s)
I got a set of Campagnolo Strada cranks with a 42 ring and a 52 ring. The 42 cannot be run by itself because the 42 bolts to the 52. If I want to use it on a fixed gear what do I need to just run the 42? Or is there another front back teeth ratio / combo that would work with this? or on other words how can I run this crank on a SS/FG? Thanks

You need BMX chain ring bolts.

No. Only one ring is attached to the spider. The smaller ring bolts onto the larger ring.

OP: either run the bigger ring by itself, buy a new chainring altogether, or cut/grind down the big ring.

Hey Genius. It's Campagnolo. Says it right on the cranks, as well as all of their other fine componentry.
Kthxbye.

Perhaps, but thinly sliced Campagnola is excellent on a ciabatta roll with basil aioli.

Ahh, che delizioso!

You're right. I didn't even look at the pictures.

ha... Okay so Campagnolo.. the 42 is the back ring so grinding may not be an option or else it would look pretty bad. where can I look to find a new ring to fit the spider i have?

Campagnolo Strada cranks are probably 144 bcd. That used to be a Campy standard. If so, lots of 144 bcd track chain rings would fit.

looks like a 3 arm spider...good luck, if so.

jholland 01-12-09 10:31 PM

it is a three arm spider... how bad is it?

JackD 01-12-09 10:34 PM

Just run the 52 up front. I don't think you will find any other chain ring that will fit unless you have someone mill one for you.

Personally, I'd ebay it and buy something which will work out better.

Pretty bad. Three hole chain rings are very obsolete, but a six hole 116 bcd ring like this could be used if you really want to keep those cranks.

Looks to be an aluminum Gran Sport three-arm crank. A number of 3-pin 116 BCD rings are available. Save the double for later.

A quick search yielded these:

That 40t chainring on Ebay is cool, it's made of steel. Very macho indeed, your friends will be jealous, I'm sure.

stryper 01-13-09 07:54 AM

4 options.

Run the 52t chainring and just buy a bigger cog for the back to get the same gear inches.

Cut the 52t chainring off just above the bolt holes and with a little sanding it might not look too bad.

Go to your lbs and see if they have any used cranks and are willing to trade for something that will allow you to run a 42t chainring.

Sell the cranks on ebay or cl and use the money to buy something that will allow you to run a 42t chainring easier.

Fanta510, it does look exactly like these:
http://velosniper.blogspot.com/2008/...t-vintage.html

It looks like the steel one would fit as is and its under $10 with shipping.. (was the steel comment sarcasm?)

the 6 hole one I could sand off the extra 3 mounts and use it.. it would match better. although they all have rounded mounts and mine they are squared off.

or

as a few people mentioned above... are there any problems with me picking up a 19t for the back and just running the 52t?

and by the way I did get the dust caps and only paid 60 for them, so it sounds like the dust caps are worth some of that.

This is an old Gran Sport crank and you're not likely to find compatible chainrings very easily at all. The good news is that these are quite collectable. You could probably sell it on eBay and get enough for it to fund a more compatible crank for SS/fixed use.

PS -- please don't butcher it! Sell it and get a different crank.

jholland 01-13-09 09:49 AM

JohnDThompson.. I would definitely prefer to not to mod anything. so that take me back to running a 18t or 19t on the back. Is there any problems with doing that, that I am unaware of?

It ought to be fine. Do you have a fixed gear rear hub?

jholland 01-13-09 01:30 PM

Yes, its fixed. In other words running a 52-19 should feel about the same as 42-15, correct?

bigger chain maybe?

norskagent 01-13-09 01:40 PM

52/19 is slightly "easier" than 42/15.

roadfix 01-13-09 01:59 PM

Look for another Campy crankset.

jholland 02-20-09 12:07 PM

i removed the 42 and the 52 is flush. they work and fit perfectly on my crappy $200 2009 dawes ss from ebay... so to confirm this bike http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2009-ROAD-RA...3%3A1|294%3A50 has a campy bottom bracket..

Again, how did you figure that out?
