traveling with a bike
i know this has been discussed, but does anyone know the "current" policy of chinatown bus and greyhound. i remember i could just toss my bike in the chinatown bus but i had to get a box for greyhound. is that still the case?

oh snap.... http://www.greyhound.com/home/en/contactus.aspx phones are awesome |
i have heard people say you can toss it in the bottom area of a chinatown bus without a box, but i haven't tried yet.
|
If your were tough, you'd just ride it to where you need to bring it.
|
update, so i just called greyhound. you do need a box, they will/can provide a box (10 dollars) and they will charge extra for traveling with a bike(15-30).
|
You can take it on the Chinatown bus and even lock it to the bars underneath. If you ask, they sometimes say no, but let you do it in person. Greyhound you need to buy a box and disassemble it to fit. Or bring it already boxed. And they don't(at least when I did it) charge you extra--just the box fee.

be sure to keep track of your box using Greyhound too..

I've taken the C-town bus to D.C on at 10am friday b4 with 2 bikes. No problemos with them. Awesome Riding city is D.C if any of you ever get a chance highly recommended. Any other cities recommendations? I heard Boston isnt that great since the streets are tight and bumpy and nasty drivers too. D.C big smooth streets with not much traffic.
cheers. |
i take apex bus (11th and arch) from philly to baltimore. they never have any problems and theres always plenty of room in cargo.

Tangential topic: Any of you guys from Philly know if I can take my bike on the SEPTA train without a permit?
|
if you mean regional rail i don't know but i do know that they allow you to on the orange and blue lines during off peak hours (which are basically non-commute times)
|
it is a lot cheaper to take the train with a bicycle than greyhound, plus typically fewer people
