Good fixie?

Hi, I've just looked into buying a fixie for college.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SCRAMBLER-FI...3%3A1|294%3A50

What do you guys think?

Hagisan 01-18-09 01:14 PM

My son and I each have a Scrambler and for the type of riding we do, they suit us fine.
You can get the frameset from them for 139 shipped and get the rest of the components for cheap it you look around eBay and CL.

But if you're going to spend $650 there are much better options out there for you. Just use google.

<edit sp> <edit #2>

If you're just going to have it for college commuting I would check out bikesdirect.com They have FG/SS bikes at a decent entry level price.

im feeling the orange

vegipowrd 01-18-09 01:33 PM

Price isn't bad for a custom-ish set up. You may find it cheaper, but it just depends how fast you want to be riding.
I would run a brake

LoRoK 01-18-09 01:55 PM

I think you should also consider other types of bikes. You might find that you enjoy riding, and then your fashion statement won't be as versatile. I don't mean to be harsh, but the way you word that, "fixie for college" just makes me think you are thinking of fashion more than riding a bike.

love my scrambler. it's in my sig.

Taylor Mefford 01-18-09 03:19 PM

I personally like the bike, however it may be overpriced. On the other hand, that frame set is only like 120 bucks or something, so if it got scratched or something on campus it wouldn't be the end of the world.

4zn_balla 01-18-09 04:05 PM

They seem okay. the geo isn't true track, but they're a quality frame for the price.

btw. These guys are my LBS and so is ben's so if you have any questions.....

dayvan cowboy 01-18-09 04:12 PM

i like that you have the option of making a tarck as **** bike right away.

johnnytheboy 01-18-09 04:13 PM

The geo is tighter than it looks.

I got in on a group buy- got the frame/fork/cane creek sealed hs installed/salsa liplock seat collar shipped to my door for $157.
Can't beat it!

Scratcher33 01-18-09 04:18 PM

can't you get a complete steamroller for about that price?

/me kills self

GMERGOD 01-18-09 04:29 PM

Yeah, I am not expert on track bike.. However I have a common-sense with my own instinct... I look at bike is very quality bulit, but is overprice.. Why not you check out bike direct or used track bianch concept (2005-2008) for $600 or less..

Good Luck.. ;)

Huh.

^I usually don't know what that person means in their posts.

edit: Scramblers are cool bikes for the price, but I wouldn't pay that for a complete. I got my frame then built it up with parts i already had soit was a good deal. A BD bike will be better overall for a complete IMHO.

do while x 01-18-09 05:33 PM

you should definitely get a fixie, bro.

yea same here. i can't figure out if they don't speak english very well or just have something against proof reading.

kassebaum 01-18-09 07:03 PM

its pretty obvious that guys first language isn't english.

also, to thread starter, i would def. NOT spend almost 700 bones on a scrambler build up. Why don't you get a bikes direct windsor hour for 300, then guy a set of deep v rims for 40-50 a rim, then get an LBS to lace the windsor hubs to the rim.

that way you have a cheap "fixie for college" and the tarcked out look of veeps like you are going for here.

bw286 01-18-09 07:44 PM

scrambler frame plus bikeisland wheels plus parts from a local shop or from on here would be the best way. i really like the scrambler for a $100 frameset.

Still not a very good way to go about it. You'd wind up paying 100 for rims 64 for spokes, if you want double butted, 44.80, if not, plus 80 for the wheel build. You're then paying 230 for a wheel build around a non-special hub. You would be better off buying a new complete wheelset and selling the stock ones.

bw286 01-18-09 11:06 PM

it's pretty obvious that kassebaum has no idea what he's talking about

roastbeef 01-18-09 11:19 PM

yea, that's pretty terrible advice.

GMERGOD 01-19-09 03:01 AM

I don't care if anybody don't understand my post at all because my grammars has some errors.. thats your problems. I bet you won't understanding an ancient english books.. Many authors re-write book from old english books to make people understanding.. unfortunately many authors really misinterpreted and twisted the words from old English to new literature books for people whoever can read and more understanding like you.. You guys won't understand Egypt's craved as wrote language of picture on walls. you guys can't figure who did bulit pyramid on egypt, also.. then don't insult my intelligence..

isn't America the land of freedom and speech? Isn't this forums for everyone who is disable, race, languages, on and on.. ?

anyway, stay on topic: You can buy Mercier Kilo TT fixed gear/ss track bike 53cm @ ebay..
