Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Wow...gotta tell ya at 47 years of age, it is hard to break into this crowd. Now I am finding out that my years on a trike and bigwheel were for naught...

You guys don't know it yet...but you are getting older...

I'm 35 and did not start riding fixed till about 3 years ago when I had a motorcycle wreck. It was rehab for my foot.

ouch hanjin, sorry to hear about your wreck. Hope your rehab was successful, what kind of motorcycle? I had a couple of wrecks on mine too...but I haven't rode a motorcycle in a couple of decades now.

oops so as not to hijack... I now have a Taxi and Tokyo and have been known to fix the Tokyo when the mood strikes.

I rode a Penny Farthing but I never owned one. It belonged to the bike shop where I worked in the mid-70's. The brand was Rideable Replica, if I remember right. Not too difficult to ride if you're an experienced fixed gear rider (which I wasn't at that time) . . .

Getting on was easy, riding it was fairly easy . . . getting off was difficult. I had to take one foot off the pedal and reach back and down (while riding with direct drive, remember), and find this really small (or so it seemed at that time) foot peg.

Balance was not an issue, as I recall . . . only the stop-and-get-off part was scary!

I had a low side on my Anniversary gift from my wife a Ducati 998. Completly destroyed my foot:

Fixed gear helped me to get my foot and leg back into shape. But I still have pain from time to time. I really liked riding fixed so I now own 3 track bikes, along with my 1 road bike and 2 mountain bikes.

Not mine, it belongs to a little fella from a cycling family that I know. Go ahead and hate on the non traditional geometry with the sloping top tube.

My son learned to ride on one of those. Really great idea for learning balance the pedaling comes second.

yeah it is, used to look just like yours untill i upgraded to STI's. they finally went bad and I couldn't find all the old part to put it back so I replaced it with a new roadie and keep looking at it in the corner of the living room and thought it wasn't time ot retire it just yet so I started to do the conversion. I bought it used a while ago any idea what year they are? I am guessing a '92 maybe?

Yeah My bike is 1993 Paramount PDG 3Series.. Your bike must be 93 as similar mine.. Because your bike and my bike have same color.. 1992 is red and 1994 is yellow or tan, I think that..

Anyway I have been thinking about selling my original bike or convert my bike into single-speed like yours.. but i don't have to decide yet..
