Which Sugino 75 bottom bracket?
 

ok so two different reliable bike shops told me two different things and i dont know who to listen to.
one bike shop (Monatano Velo in Oakland) gave me a Shimano UN54 w/ a 110 spindle for my Sugino 75s.
another bike shop (Freewheel Hayes in San Francisco) told me that Montano Velo gave me the wrong one.

who is right?

I believe Shimano UN54 is JIS taper, where Sugino 75 has ISO taper & use a 109mm BB for 42mm chainline.

I think the "correct" length for Sugino 75 is 109mm.

You might be able to work it without going 3/32. Tell me if it works. ... I would love to know any Sealed-Bearing solutions for Sugino 75. I wish I could use their 102mm BBs.

yep this is correct.
the Sugino 75 uses a 109mm bb and it is ISO taper.
don't run it on the UN54.

Phil Wood makes a sealed ISO 109 BB.

White Industries does too, which uses the Shimano BB tool. Looks nice and most love WI's gear.

If you are looking at the UN54 then you probably don't want to spend the kind of cash needed to get the Phil Wood BB. What you want is the Miche Pista BB which comes in 107mm and 110mm spindle lengths and costs about $30. It is ISO which is what the Sugino site says the 75's are as well. http://www.suginoltd.co.jp/track_e.html
The 75's ask for a 109mm spindle but the Miche will work because it has adjustable cups. My rear hub has a 44mm chainline so I got the 110. For a 42mm chainline you'd probably want the 107.

+1 on the Miche BB. It's close enough and ISO. You *can* put the UN on but it's going to be out of whack and the wrong taper.

there's been a lot of posts hating the miche since it tends not to stay tight. there's also a sugino 68 mighty for around 65.00 that's a perfect fit. i've seen them on ebay for 35 - 45 too...

wait, what about the sugino 75 bb? servicing isnt that bad...

yeah i'd go for the Sugino 68 Super Mighty.
it's the cheaper version of the 75 bb.
nothing wrong with cone and cup.

From my own experience, I can tell you that a Shimano 110mm bb will work, but ultimately its not a very satisfactory solution. It works fine, but the chainline will end up being off by a few mm. Get it right the first time...go with the Sugino 68 or Sugino 75 BB.

I run the Miche 110 with my 75's, formula hubs and a surly cog. The chainline is pretty much perfect as far as I can tell. The cups did come loose once and I tightened the **** out of them afterwards. Haven't had any problems since.

I've been using a UN54-107 for over 8k hard miles with Sugino75. Chainline is ''good enough.'
The crank will sit further out on the JIS taper, hence using 107mm.
According to Sheldon Brown, it will sit 4.5mm further out, although I have better than 3.5mm chainline offset.
I started with the Sugino 75 BB but trashed it during a wet grimy century ride, so decided to go sealed.

Its worth noting that the 107 and 110 mm UN54 BBs yield the same chainline. The 3mm difference is on the non-drive side of the spindle.

If you want sealed bearings and have the money for it, go with this BB.

Thanks for the note - I never knew. I'll have to remeasure my chainline, but with Formula fixed/fixed hub and previously a Surly cog (just changed it after is was sharktoothed at 12k mi) it was definitely not 4.5mm off. Maybe 2mm at worst. (I know the math doesn't make this possible) Runs smooth and noise free and after 8k miles no uneven wear on sides of Sugino75 48t chainring.

i run a miche bb and its the best option for no worry sealed bottom brackets with the correct tapper and relativley cheap price.

I remeasured multiple ways with calipers. The chaining tooth center is 44.5mm from frame center with the set up I have. So I have about a 2-3mm chainline offset.

I imagine companies choosing ISO or JIS like a gang affiliation.

YES YES YES! the 75 BB is one of the best investments I have made. its a little like analog vs. digital, but in this case it a casio vs. a moog. the 75 BB was butter smooth the day i put it in. there is alot to say for manual adjustability.
